PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
LAMB OF GOD – “The Duke”
The softer, more melodic side of Lamb of God? Well, sort of, but “The Duke” is still among the heaviest songs on the Top 50 this week. The band’s latest single is the title track off of their upcoming EP. This song was purposely held off of Lamb Of God’s last album (VII: Sturm und Drang) for a special reason. It was written for Wayne Ford, a fan of the band who frontman Randy Blythe befriended back in 2012 (click here to read about Ford’s battle with Leukemia, and how it inspired Blythe). “The Duke” deals with facing your imminent demise. It’s emotionally heavy (as is the story, which I highly recommend reading). Not only is the song inspired by, and dedicated to, a fan of Lamb Of God, it is also being used to raise awareness for bone marrow donations. Kudos to Blythe for making a dying fan feel special in his final days, and doing his part to help others. “The Duke” happens to be a kickass song in its own right, but because of the story, it feels extra special to be sharing it during Thanksgiving week (just as it hits the Top 50).
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (by Adam Waldman)
As predicted last week, Five Finger Death Punch and Volbeat both climbed into the top 4, and Ghost moved into the top 5. After recent domination by Metallica, Green Day and Pretty Reckless, it looks like Active Rock is cycling through a number of songs to spread the love at #1. Skillet dropped after one week on top, and now Disturbed has given way to Highly Suspect after one week at the top. Even if Highly Suspect’s spins remain flat next week, they should hold on to the #1 position for at least a couple of weeks. Avenged Sevenfold once looked like a lock to reach the top, but the momentum has stalled on “The Stage.” Right now, the only artists outside the top 5 that have a chance to make a move to the top are Metallica and Green Day once again (although probably not until January as things slow down for the holidays).
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

MESSAGE FROM SYLVIA – “Heart Of War”
SEASONS AFTER – “Fighter”

THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
Trends don’t lie. Okay, sometimes they do … but not this week, as Highly Suspect takes over the top spot of the latest Mediabase Active Rock Airplay chart just as the early trends last week suggested would happen. Disturbed slips to #2 with precisely the same number of spins as they enjoyed the previous week; Five Finger Death Punch and Volbeat claim the third and fourth spots respectively.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
Last week’s only new Top 20 song is this week’s only new Top 10 song, as Metallica claims the #10 position to go along with the #9 spot…
Green Day has the only song new to the Top 20 this week, and didn’t miss replacing themselves in the Top 10 by all that much…
This week, it’s the Top 30 that has no new entries, meaning that only the order has changed for more than the upper half of the chart.
Through Fire and Art of Anarchy both enjoy debuts in the Top 40 this week
For the second straight week, the Top 50 includes the published chart debut of a song that first received airplay more than three months ago. Last week’s perseverance award went to Amity Affliction. This week, the honor belongs to Sylar’s “Dark Daze.”
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
RISING
Highly Suspect – “My Name Is Human”
Metallica – “Atlas, Rise”
Green Day – “Still Breathing”
FALLING
Skillet – “Feel Invincible”
Pretty Reckless – “Take Me Down”
Metallica – “Moth Into Flame”
TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
Metallica will likely feel thankful this (U.S.) holiday season for the odd situation of having three songs in the Active Rock Top 50 simultaneously. Two isn’t all that uncommon anymore, but three doesn’t seem to occur very frequently. Here’s to a Happy Thanksgiving for all those who will be celebrating later this week, and my hope is that you can find some musical highlights to include in your list of things you’re thankful for this year.
WRAP-UP
That’s all for this week. Tune in to HardRockDaddy.com every Tuesday for the HRD Radio Report. \m/
