PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (by Adam Waldman)
FAILURE ANTHEM – “First World Problems”
While the United States appears to be falling apart at the seams in recent weeks, our problems still pale by comparison to many other people around the globe, especially those in third world countries. It’s easy to get caught up in the racial and political tension that has left citizens of the United States taking sides like children in a schoolyard game, but the blessing in disguise is that we still have choices. Failure Anthem’s latest single, “First World Problems,” offers a stark reminder that our problems, while notable, are relatively small in the larger scheme of things. This song was written well before the tragic events that have taken place in recent times, but the facts and statistics displayed in the lyric video offer proof positive that “First World Problems” are not nearly as devastating on the whole as those who have no real hope in sight. The song has an understandable edge to it, and a somewhat unexpected display of shredding guitars that is more commonplace in songs from ’80s hard rock and metal than today’s Active Rock.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
By a razor thin margin, there’s a new #1 song on the Mediabase Active Rock Airplay Chart as Red Hot Chili Peppers dethrone Volbeat after an impressive nine-week stay at the top. How close was it? 9 spins, out of over 2,000 monitored plays each. That four-tenths of one percent more airplay. So close, in fact, that at least the first rolling chart after the official weekly benchmark was posted found Volbeat moving back in front by roughly the same margin. Shinedown remains third in airplay, though Chevelle may give them a tough battle for an eventual moment at the top.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
As usual, the holiday week saw many stations make few (if any) changes to their playlists, so there’s scant movement to be found on the chart.
The Top 10 songs remain unchanged…
Hellyeah’s cover of “I Don’t Care Anymore” is the only entry into the Top 20, sliding past a plummeting Sixx A.M. …
Zakk Wylde (f. Corey Taylor) climbs into the Top 30, while Beartooth backs into the tier (despite slightly less airplay)…
Not a single new entry in the Top 40 for the week …
Crobot has the only Top 50 debut, claiming the final spot on the published chart.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
MOVING UP
3 Doors Down – “Still Alive”
Hellyeah – “I Don’t Care Anymore”
Thrice – “Black Honey”
DROPPING DOWN
Volbeat – “The Devil’s Bleeding Crown”
Halestorm – “Mayhem”
Sixx: A.M. – “Rise”
TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
The way the 4th of July holiday fell seems to have impacted two weeks worth of charts, with stations going outside of their usual rotations toward the end of last week, and then having relatively few adds/changes in time to make significant differences this week. Overall playlists remain on the narrow side, with the gap between the “big hits” and the rest of the chart seeming to continue to grow in “feel,” perhaps even more than the actual numbers. It’s somewhat reminiscent of what occurred as the (Mainstream) Rock chart was winding down to its eventual demise, where as little as one station giving a song airplay could create a Top 50 “hit.” Right now, 3-4 stations can easily get a single onto the published chart with medium amounts of airplay. It’s also possible for one station in heavy rotation (with a couple more believers) to achieve the same result.
