PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
SAUL – “Trial By Fire”
Life experiences, particularly trials and tribulations, create the foundation upon which our lives are built. Perhaps our most valuable lessons come from a loss that is so great that it makes us see life through a lens of imminent mortality. Once we appreciate the fragility of life, we tend to proceed with more purpose than before. When Saul emerged onto the scene, they did so with a powerful, personal story of anguish. Inspired by the loss of the older brother of Blake and Zach Bedsaul, the band’s song “Brother” dealt with the pain and frustration of loss. Their brother was the first case of H1N1 (Swine Flu) in Iowa. Aside from being the song that put Saul on the map, in a way, “Brother” feels like the first chapter of the story.
Mortality has a way of making people seize the moment like no other force in the world. “Trial By Fire” feels like the continuation of the story that began with loss, and resulted in the motivation to squeeze every ounce of juice that life has to offer…
“We do what we have to…to be who we want to…let them all doubt you…walkin’ the wire…trial by fire”
Listening to the impassioned delivery of the lyrics above, I was reminded of Teddy Roosevelt’s famous 1910 speech – The Man In The Arena. The message in the speech is that those who dare to take chances in spite of any obstacles are more important than the critics who sit in judgment of the doers. “Trial By Fire” is an inspirational message of hope born out of the realization that life is too short to be deterred by the doubts of others. Like “Brother,” “Trial By Fire” is raw, fierce, in-your-face hard rock, albeit with some unexpected grooves to keep you off balance. The follow-up single to Saul’s smash hit offers further proof that this is rising band has staying power.
