PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
EVE TO ADAM – “No Easy Way Out”
Survivor is the band that comes to mind for most when they think of the Rocky movies (deservedly so). But that doesn’t mean that the band was the only one to contribute tone-setting songs to the movies in the series. One of my personal favorites has always been Robert Tepper’s “No Easy Way Out.” There is something about it that just gets your blood pumping and adrenaline flowing. Granted, the song has a distinct ’80s feel (particularly the keyboards), but for those who grew up watching Rocky movies, “No Easy Way Out” is a joyful trip down memory lane. With songs like this, that have a place deep in the hearts of many, there is always a risk in trying to make it your own with a cover.
Eve To Adam has threaded the needle perfectly with their interpretation of this underrated classic. By replacing the ’80s keyboards with crunchy, powerful guitars, the band has given “No Easy Way Out” a modern twist (and a significant shot of testosterone). All the while, they stay fairly true to the original when it comes to the vocal melody line. Because of the tie-in with Rocky IV, Tepper’s original has an arena rock feel, but Eve To Adam takes it to another level of arena rock intensity with their interpretation. I’ve been a fan of this band for years, and have always felt like they were vastly underrated. A number of bands these days are raising their profile with inspired covers, and using them as the seeds to sow future success. I can’t say what programmers will do, but in my opinion, this song is as deserving as the Bad Wolves cover of “Zombie” to get significant radio play.
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (By Adam Waldman)
Last week, it was predicted that there was a decent chance that Disturbed and Greta Van Fleet would flip flop again this week. The up-and-comers had their moment in the sun, but they have started their decline, giving the veterans at least one more week on top. When Disturbed drops in the next week or two, Shinedown is a virtual lock to move into the #1 position. However, they are in the same situation as Disturbed with a hot newcomer on their tail. Bad Wolves has already scored one of the hottest songs of 2018, and they look poised to add another #1 single before the year ends. Time will tell…
