PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
THE LAZYS – “Nothing But Trouble”
The modern day love child of AC/DC and Aerosmith is what comes to mind as you immerse yourself in “Nothing But Trouble,” the lead single off of the latest album by The Lazys. To some, these Canadian rockers may be something of an overnight sensation, but the reality is that their journey was anything but a “lazy” one. The journey actually began in 2006 in their home country of Australia. Born out of two separate garage bands, frontman Leon Harrison and guitarist Matty Morris joined forces to allow each of them to concentrate on their strengths (both were singer/guitarists). The end result is a band that has the rock star qualities of the legends that inspired them.
“Nothing But Trouble,” a “spirited ode to a particular type of raging bull rebel” was actually inspired by the iconic Bon Scott, who (according to Harrison) was “someone who never pushed it too far, but gave it a good knock. Kind of like us after a night of drinking! We never get arrested, but we sure have a good time.” That being said, it’s understandable if you’re tempted to head to the nearest pub to hoist a few after listening to this timeless rock and roll track.
It’s bands like The Lazys, and songs like “Nothing But Trouble” that the Active Rock format needs to infuse some old-school, rock and roll swagger into the mix.
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (By Adam Waldman)
As predicted last week, Three Days Grace became the first artist to spend more than one week at the top (after four consecutive weeks of “one-and-dones”). Though the streak of rotating #1s was finally broken, it doesn’t look like there will be a lengthy run for “The Mountain,” as Five Finger Death Punch is closing in with “Gone Away.” A drop by Three Days Grace next week (combined with another solid week for FFDP) could start the revolving door at the top once again. With the number of Active Rock staples currently rising in the Top 10, it seems likely that the churning at the top of the chart will be similar to the churning at the bottom for the foreseeable future.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN (by Jon Loveless)
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
No changes in the composition of the Top 10 once again this week, only reordering. Only one song different (“Zombie” – Bad Wolves) among the Top 10 for the past month now…
No difference in the structure of the Top 20 this week in fact, and even very little change in the order of 11-20…
The only new arrival in the Top 30 is Fever 333…
A pair of songs do reach the Top 40 milestone, the newest single from Stone Temple Pilots clearly the standout (moves from 41 to 32 by more than doubling its spins) while Chicago newcomers The Outfit also reach the benchmark…
The final portion of the Top 50 has most of the action this week, with three debuts and a re-entry. Bullet For My Valentine enjoys some early action for “Over It” to score the highest premiere, Wayland gets a nice bump in airplay to move up as well.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
RISING
Bad Wolves – “Zombie”
Sevendust – “Dirty”
Stone Temple Pilots – “Roll Me Under”
FALLING
Greta Van Fleet – “Safari Song”
Pop Evil – “Waking Lions”
Breaking Benjamin – “Red Cold River”
TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
Nice to see Wayland get a little more support from radio, at least enough to get them onto the chart some two months after “Ghost” first showed signs of airplay. When the top of the chart isn’t moving, as has been the case for a month, the number of spins available for anything to grow becomes even more limited, and makes it an even tougher grind than usual.
