PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
DOROTHY – “Flawless”
Dorothy burst onto the scene with a modern version of Led Zeppelin meets Janis Joplin. They are among of number of interesting new artists that have invoked the spirit of Zeppelin in recent times. However, there has always been something different about Dorothy that is hard to explain. Just when you think that you may have a handle on their distinct sound, they throw you a curveball with the lead single from their upcoming album 28 Days In The Valley.
“Flawless” doesn’t sound like the signature sound that Dorothy created with their debut album, but it is captivating nonetheless. When you have a vocalist like Dorothy Martin, it’s the voice that grabs your attention regardless of the song style. What has remained with “Flawless” is the bluesy, Joplin-esque mystique and passion that Martin exhibited on the previous songs that have gained traction on Active Rock radio.
It’s no secret that artists who appeal to Active Rock audiences build up goodwill that allows them to spread their wings a bit and still get the benefit of the doubt. Does “Flawless” sound like what you usually hear on Active Rock radio? Not necessarily, but I don’t see that as a bad thing. Like Lzzy Hale, Martin’s voice is one that we need to hear as often as possible.
For quite some time, I’ve thought that P!nk could make a kickass rock album if she ever chose to go that route. Dorothy’s “Flawless” is the type of song that I envisioned P!nk doing. There is so much to like about this song. It already cracked the top 50 this week. Hopefully, Active Rock programmers will continue to reward originality, and give “Flawless” the opportunity to climb the chart.
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (By Adam Waldman)
Seether’s “Betray And Degrade” has officially peaked. After going positive in spins after a slightly down week, the song started a meaningful decline. This allowed Royal Blood to remain on top for one more week, but it ends next week for sure. Papa Roach is surging, and is now less than 200 spins from the top. With Royal Blood trending down and Papa Roach gaining more momentum by the week, it’s a lock that “Born For Greatness” is the #1 song next week. Once they reach the top, they will likely be challenged by Greta Van Fleet’s “Safari Song” within the next few weeks.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN (by Jon Loveless)
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
Breaking Benjamin breaks into the Top 10, but the more notable movement near the top of the chart is Seether peaking at #2 after spending six weeks in that spot…
Three Days Grace leads a pair of new arrivals in the Top 20 this week…
There’s also two new arrivals in Top 30, led by the second single released from last fall’s fantastic album from Fozzy…
Four songs break the Top 40 barrier for the first time, including the week’s highest true debut, the first solo single from Korn’s Jonathan Davis….
The final ten spots of the Top 50 include four songs that weren’t on the published chart last week, but only one is an actual debut. That’s the latest from Dorothy, dramatic style change and all.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
RISING
Greta Van Fleet – “Safari Song”
Three Days Grace – “The Mountain”
Five Finger Death Punch – “Gone Away”
FALLING
Five Finger Death Punch – “Trouble”
All That Remains – “The Thunder Rolls”
Marilyn Manson – “KILL4ME”
TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
The “close-but-no-cigar” routine for Seether has to be getting a little bit familiar. It’s the fourth time in their last five singles that they’ve fallen short of the top spot on the Mediabase chart (only “Let You Down” broke the streak). This despite each song falling between the #2 and #6 positions.
