PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
ASKING ALEXANDRIA – “Alone In A Room”
There are two sides to Asking Alexandria, particularly Danny Worsnop, who runs the gamut between angry growls and melodic singing. My personal preference is the latter because it allows for the uniqueness of his vocals to shine through. During his fairly brief departure from Asking Alexandria, Worsnop focused more on his clean vocals with We Are Harlot. Though the band had their shining moments, it’s understandable why he would choose to return to the band that he helped launch into the upper echelon of the Active Rock format. Although “Alone In A Room” definitely has a bit more edge than the more subdued “Moving On,” this song has the same big hooks and melodic vocals as one of my favorite songs of 2014.
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (By Adam Waldman)
As predicted last week, the gap between Foo Fighters and Royal Blood was too much to close in one week. However, it is a virtual lock that “I Only Lie When I Love You” is the new #1 song next week, appropriately allowing Royal Blood ascend to the throne as the year comes to a close. Based on the current trend, it looks like this could be a several week run at the top for Royal Blood, as they lead the charge in to 2018.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.
SPIN IT…
ANOTHER LOST YEAR – “Call It Like It Is”
BOBAFLEX – “Long Time Coming”
JOSH TODD & THE CONFLICT – “Rain”
VEER UNION – “Last Regret”
GRANNY 4 BARREL – “Freak Flag”
RANDOM HERO – “The Impossible”
FOZZY – “Painless”
DROP IT…
Imagine Dragons – “Thunder”
Awolnation – “Passion”
Thirty Seconds To Mars – “Walk On Water”
Bush – “This Is War”
The Struts – “One Night Only”
Adelita’s Way – “Notorious”
Beck – “Up All Night”
THE BREAKDOWN (by Jon Loveless)
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
No changes in the composition of the Top 10 this week, only small position swaps… I Prevail reaches the Top 20, while Asking Alexandria returns to the Top 20 with a song that’s been running in place for almost two months now (between #19 and #21 for the past seven weeks)… Black Label Society scores the week’s only new song among the Top 30… The success of cover* songs continues with the arrival of Tom Keifer (f. Lzzy Hale) in the Top 40, joined by the newest single from Deadset Society. I ask…*Is it actually a cover if you’re redoing a song you originally sang in the first place?”… Six songs in the final ten spots of the published chart weren’t there a week ago. Five are making their chart debut, one is a re-entry.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
RISING
Royal Blood – “I Only Lie When I Love You”
Papa Roach – “Born For Greatness”
Stone Temple Pilots – “Meadow”
FALLING
Foo Fighters – “The Sky Is A Neighborhood”
Nothing More – “Go To War”
Gary Clark Jr. – “Come Together”
TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
Definitely seeing the impact of narrow playlists this week, with the bottom part of the chart now requiring little more than light/medium rotation at less than a half dozen stations to have a “Top 50 single.”
