PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
ANOTHER LOST YEAR – “Call It Like It Is”
Five years ago today (on 12/12/12), the seeds were planted for the launch of Hard Rock Daddy a few months later. Those seeds were watered (so to speak) by Another Lost Year. If not for Clinton Cunanan and company, there’s no telling when (or if) Hard Rock Daddy would have come to fruition.
Inspired by the traffic to a personal blog that came after Another Lost Year shared my Top 12 Hard Rock Songs of 2012 on social media (which featured “War On The Inside”), I decided that my next site would focus more specifically on music. After going back and forth on ideas with a former colleague from Billboard Magazine, Hard Rock Daddy was launched on March 1, 2013.
It seemed serendipitous that the official video for ALY’s latest single, “Call It Like It Is,” premiered today on Loudwire. Feeling a debt of gratitude, and having a desire to celebrate the five year anniversary of a moment that literally changed the course of my life, I called an audible and bumped this week’s planned featured song to next week. But that is not the only reason that I’ve chosen “Call It Like It Is” this week. After only listening to it a few times, I can honestly say that it’s my favorite song that the band has released since I discovered them five years ago.
I was initially drawn to “War On The Inside” because the song (in particular Cunanan’s vocals) reminded me of one of my favorite albums of the ‘90s {Foma by The Nixons}. This time around, on “Call It Like It Is,” I detect an interesting (and surprising) mixture of influences. From the modern southern flair of Black Stone Cherry to the catchy Pop Evil-esque hooks, ALY has proven that they deserve to get attention from Active Rock radio. In a very current way, the song also conjures up memories of George Lynch’s classic riffs with Dokken, and the powerful, shining vocal harmonies of the golden era of Kansas.
Listeners may hear different influences (or none at all), but what cannot be disputed is that Another Lost Year has hit it out of the park with “Call It Like It Is.” If programmers are smart, they will jump all over this one! Just “calling it like it is!”
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (By Adam Waldman)
With four out of the top five songs declining, it looks like Royal Blood could be lining themselves up to be the next #1 song with “I Only Lie When I Love You.” They currently trail Foo Fighters by around 450 spins, so it would take a pretty significant drop from the current chart-topper, along with continued strength by Royal Blood, to reach the top next week. It’s possible, but not likely given the usual holiday slowdown. The holiday slowdown may allow Foo Fighters to ride out the rest of the year on top, but that looks less likely given this week’s chart action (and three more weeks to go in 2017).
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN (by Jon Loveless)
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
Ten Years is the only new entry into the Top 10 this week…
The first single with new singer Jeff Gutt quickly lands Stone Temple Pilots in the Top 20. It was the only new entry into this tier…
Bush reaches the Top 30…
A trio of bands crack the Top 40 (Within Reason, Stone Horses, Kobra And The Lotus)….
A big shakeup this week at the bottom of the chart with debuts from While She Sleeps, Five Finger Death Punch, Of Mice & Men, and Machine Head. Also, Sin Shake Sin re-enters the chart…
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
RISING
Papa Roach – “Born For Greatness”
Metallica – “Spit Out The Bone”
Stone Temple Pilots – “Meadow”
FALLING
Nothing More – “Go To War”
Manafest – “House Of Cards”
The Struts – “One Night Only”
TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
We can only hope that this trend of incredibly marginal spins at the bottom of the chart is due to year-end, holiday malaise. If not, you have to wonder what the future holds for the state of the format.
