PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
ART OF ANARCHY – “The Madness”
Many supergroups end up being nothing more than a one-off project for various reasons, but it’s hard to think of one as unlikely as Art Of Anarchy’s early beginnings. The original lineup featured Scott Weiland, Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal, John Moyer and the Votta brothers (Jon and Vince). Although Weiland is the only singer on the band’s debut album, he claimed that he was never in the band before his untimely passing. Things seem to be much clearer now as Art Of Anarchy returns with new music and a new frontman in Scott Stapp.
“The Madness” is an apt description of the confusion with their departed former frontman. It also happens to be a fitting title for a song being featured on Election Day in the United States, as is the band name. There are some particularly poignant lyrics to capture this historic moment in time as well…
“The other side of fear is freedom…the other side of pain is healing…the madness keeps me from the other side. The truth, the lie, the shame, the glory…the love, the hate an endless story…the madness on the other side.”
Thankfully, the election connection is coming to a merciful ending tonight. More important than the timely lyrics is the chemistry on display with the band’s new frontman. Having been through tough times with Weiland, and Stapp having had his own share of trials and tribulations, you might think that there would a darkness to this song, but quite the opposite is true. There’s passion with a hint of pain, but for the most part, this is an incredibly melodic single with an uplifting feel. The song cracked the Top 50 this week, and hopefully has legs to make a nice run up the chart. Either way, this is a great start for the latest incarnation of a supergroup that very nearly never got off the ground.
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (by Adam Waldman)
As predicted last week, Skillet’s “Feel Invincible” ascends to the #1 position. Pretty Reckless dropped to #2, but they will be passed by both Disturbed and Highly Suspect next week. Metallica would have passed Pretty Reckless next week also, but once again, they have overlapped singles, effectively ending any chance that “Moth Into Flame” had in becoming the second #1 song before Hardwired…to Self-Destruct is even released. With “Atlas, Rise” – the third single off of their upcoming album now out – it seems to be that Active Rock radio programmers have allotted a certain amount of spins for the band each week. The only artist that can stop Metallica seems to be themselves.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
Just as last week’s early trends suggested, there’s a new #1 atop the Mediabase Active Rock Airplay chart, as Skillet rises to the top. Nobody can say it was quick nor easy for them, as “Feel Invincible” debuted on the chart 22 weeks ago. Pretty Reckless holds on to the #2 spot, narrowly beating out Disturbed. The song to watch, however, might be the latest from Highly Suspect who rise to #4 with a second straight week of strong growth.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
Avenged Sevenfold reaches the Top 10, one of the least surprising chart developments in recent weeks…
Both Shinedown and Beartooth break into the Top 20, nice movement (particularly for Shinedown)…
Three songs move into the Top 30 this week, led by a third rapidly-released track from Metallica…
Yet another trio of songs climb into the Top 40, with Pop Evil setting the pace for the group…
In addition to the mid-chart debut for Metallica, two other songs debut in the Top 50 this week, highlighted by a strong effort from Art of Anarchy, their first single released with new frontman Scott Stapp.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
RISING
Ghost – “Square Hammer”
Avenged Sevenfold – “The Stage”
Metallica – “Atlas, Rise”
FALLING
Pretty Reckless – “Take Me Down”
Green Day – “Bang Bang”
Korn – “Rotting In Vain”
TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
Right place, right time probably lent itself to the success for Skillet’s first big rock hit in about two years. Radio was so busy power-cycling a handful of big names and high profile singles that it almost seemed that a lot of other songs quietly sat around patiently waiting for their opportunity. Some credit has to be given to Skillet’s promotional staff for encouraging radio to keep a song around since June so that it could peak around Thanksgiving. Extreme ends of the spectrum almost seem “normal” for active rock radio now, with recent #1 songs peaking in a matter of weeks, followed by one that took six months to reach the top.
