MESSAGE FROM SYLVIA – “Heart Of War”
In 2015, the Lopez-Smith brothers (Zach, Isaac and Dane) burst onto the scene with First Decree. Three of the band’s singles made an impact on Active Rock radio (“Lost In The Crowd,” “Phoenix” and “This Is Our Rise”), and “Stop” was featured on Hard Rock Daddy’s Top 135 Hard Rock Songs of 2015. This year, the Lopez-Smith brothers return with Message From Sylvia, which features Matthew Nevitt (Echovalve, DoryDrive) on lead vocals. The name of the band and the singer may have changed, but what remains the same is the melodic sound that is tailor-made for Active Rock radio. Produced by Sahaj Ticotin (Ra), “Heart Of War” should continue the success that the brothers have had in the format. If you’re a fan of Ra, you’ll definitely hear Ticotin’s stamp on this single…big, powerful, arena-rock riffs, impressive vocal harmonies and Queensryche-esque spoken word nuances. Message From Sylvia has picked up right where First Decree left off. Bands like this are exactly what the Active Rock format needs to keep things fresh and interesting.
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (by Adam Waldman)
So, Metallica finally rose to #1 last week with “Hardwired”. Maybe the song actually is “hardwired to self-destruct” as it says in the lyrics. How else do you explain a juggernaut song reaching the top, only to see a sharp decline the following week? Where did those spins go? The answer is that they went to the only band that could knock Metallica from their perch…Metallica! Confused? There is a logical (if unusual explanation) for this quirk. It is not uncommon for a band to have one single drop after the follow-up single starts gaining traction. What is unusual is seeing a song that had been showing a steady week-over-week increase in spins to just reverse course without plateauing at all before the next single impacts. But this is Metallica, so the rules of the game are different.
This is the most excitement that has surrounded Metallica in several years, so it makes sense to strike while the iron is hot. So what’s next for the band on the Active Rock chart? “Moth To Flame” (the follow-up single to “Hardwired”) may very well be the next single to challenge Green Day (who took back the #1 spot this week, despite a slight decrease in spins). Pretty Reckless had a moderate spin increase, which was good enough to push them back to #2 (ahead of “Hardwired”).
In recent weeks, the prediction had been that the next challenger wouldn’t come for some time because the two songs that were showing strength (Volbeat’s “Seal The Deal” and Highly Suspect’s “My Name Is Human”) still lagged the top 3 by several hundred spins. Both songs continued to strengthen this week, but at a much slower pace, which has opened the door for Metallica to fly past them with “Moth To Flame” (which debuted this week at #27).
Unless Green Day and Pretty Reckless suffer a sharp decline, they are likely to stay in the top 2 for the next several weeks. Other possible contenders for #1 now include Korn’s “Rotting In Vain” and Disturbed’s “Open Your Eyes.”
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
Well, that was quick. Although Groundhog Day is still in February, Green Day returns to the top spot on the Mediabase Active Rock Airplay Chart. “Bang Bang” backs into the position with a very slight decrease in spins thanks to Metallica releasing a second track from their forthcoming album. That decision clearly robbed spins from their (now) short-lived #1. The other recent chart-topper from Pretty Reckless enjoyed very slight growth to reclaim the #2 spot.
