PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (by Adam Waldman)
FAILURE ANTHEM – “Paralyzed”
In recent weeks, “Paralyzed” has been gaining some traction on SiriusXM’s Octane, and this week, it leaps up 16 spots to crack the Top 50. Like fellow newcomers (and label-mates) Red Sun Rising and Sons Of Texas, Failure Anthem is making their debut with a single that stands out as an Active Rock track that should enjoy a steady climb up the charts as programmers discover them. It’s no surprise that they have cracked the Top 50 this week. The only surprise is that it didn’t happen sooner. The band sets the tone at the outset before hitting a powerfully emotive crescendo when the melodic chorus with a huge hook kicks in. Particularly notable are the vocals of frontman JD Eubanks, who looks every bit the part of a modern-day rock star, which is somewhat surprising when you read about his background as a chef who studied under Wolfgang Puck and served as a Navy Culinary Specialist previously. As the saying goes…”timing is everything.” The circumstances that connected Eubanks with Failure Anthem is a story for another day in a longer feature on Hard Rock Daddy. Suffice it to say that the timing was a blessing in disguise. If you haven’t discovered Failure Anthem yet, make sure to check out “Paralyzed.” Let your local stations that you want to hear more of them to keep the momentum going for these up-and-comers from North Carolina.

THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
Breaking Benjamin marks a month atop the Mediabase Active Rock airplay chart, as even a slight erosion in airplay can’t bring them down. With #2 Bring Me The Horizon and new #3 Chris Cornell effectively flat on spins, the overwhelming lead means no change at the top. Disturbed moves to #4, looking at a possible #1 by year’s end.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
One new entry in the Top 10 this week with Three Days Grace getting the benefit of songs dropping down and off of the chart…
New to the Top 20 this week are Trivium (their highest charting single I believe) and Nothing More…
Four songs break into the Top 30 this week, including a big move by Cage The Elephant and the debut of the latest from Pop Evil (“Ways To Get High”)…
Three songs join the Top 40 this week, including the debut single from Separations which regains momentum…
Four songs make their Top 50 debut, including the Lzzy Hale-voiced track by Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
MOVING UP
Disturbed – “The Light”
Shinedown – “State Of My Head”
Theory Of A Deadman – “Blow”
DROPPING DOWN
Red Sun Rising – “The Otherside”
Papa Roach – “Gravity”
Awolnation – “I Am”
FUTURES REPORT
The movement remains primarily in the lower reaches of the chart again this week, with lots of shuffling towards the bottom of the Top 50. That presents more of an illusion of change than actual change. Given the narrow playlists that are common today, most radio listeners have been subjected to essentially the same “new” songs every day for more than a month. This indicates that they’re either exponentially more tolerant than I am, or that radio collectively really doesn’t care how stale their station sounds, since very few markets have more than one terrestrial rock option today.
WRAP-UP
That’s all for this week. Tune in to HardRockDaddy.com every Tuesday for the HRD Radio Report. \m/
