PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (by Adam Waldman)
SEPTEMBER MOURNING – “Eye Of The Storm”
Dark meets light, beauty meets beast…these are the feelings that you get within the first 30 seconds of September Mourning’s latest single, “Eye Of The Storm.” The contrast between the heavy music and angelic vocals of September (the lead in the cast of characters that make up September Mourning) makes for a theatrically captivating song. Of course, theatrics are to be expected from a band that lists all of its members by character names and has an accompanying comic book to go along with their debut EP. The band and the song are both interesting and unique, yet the music is still an ideal fit for Active Rock radio, especially when you consider the growing trend of female-fronted hard rock bands. Programmers should be adding September Mourning to rotations, and fans should be calling in to request “Eye Of The Storm.”
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
Make it three weeks in a row for Breaking Benjamin atop the Mediabase Active Rock airplay chart, as the frontrunners remain largely stable. Very little change in airplay up or down for the pacesetters, nor for new #2 Bring Me The Horizon or new #3 Chris Cornell. The one spot gains for the runners up come from the descent of Red Sun Rising, who retreat to #4.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
One new entry in the Top 10 this week, as Ghost enjoys a hefty increase in airplay in their 20th week on the chart …
Theory Of A Deadman leads two new songs into the Top 20, with their latest single, “Blow”…
A trio of relatively new-blood bands ascend into the Top 30 this week, with double digit percentage growth for From Ashes To New, Parkway Drive and Aranda…
A mixed selection of styles break into the Top 40 this week, with All That Remains leading the group of three…
Even more diversity is found in the five new songs that debut in the bottom portion of the Top 50, including the venerable Def Leppard.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
MOVING UP
Disturbed – “The Light”
Shinedown – “State Of My Head”
Theory Of A Deadman – “Blow”
DROPPING DOWN
Red Sun Rising – “The Otherside”
Pop Evil – “Footsteps”
Foo Fighters – “Outside”
FUTURES REPORT
While the format continues to struggle with an identity crisis, this week provides a good example of how it can be a benefit every once in a while. On paper, there seems to be a stylistic disconnect between “Active Rock” and Def Leppard, but the band’s first single from their new album points out why I always recommend that radio listen to songs not only in isolation, but also in context. To my surprise, “Let’s Go” really doesn’t feel out of place beside its contemporaries here; there’s no “trainwreck” effect when you hear it between other common format staples. On the other hand, the same attention to detail should be paid in cases where typical Active Rock artists drift too far outside of the format. Sadly, that doesn’t always seem to be the case in today’s radio landscape.
