PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK by Adam Waldman
DISTURBED – “The Vengeful One”
After a four-year hiatus, the long-awaited return of Disturbed has finally arrived. “The Vengeful One” – the first single off of the band’s forthcoming album – just dropped this week, and it is already in the Top 15. It’s fair to say that Active Rock programmers were chomping at the bit for new music from Disturbed as much as the fans were, and that the band is back with a vengeance with their distinct brand of aggressive rock. The only ones who might not be happy about the timing of the release of “The Vengeful One” are the members of Theory Of A Deadman. After a methodical climb towards the top of the chart with “Angel,” it looks like TOAD may stall at #2 just as Breaking Benjamin finally fell back to the pack with a big drop this week. Even if there is enough gas left in the tank to push them to the top, it will be a short stay, as reaching the top for “The Vengeful One” is almost guaranteed. Sometimes, big-name acts rise to the top because of their status, not necessarily because they have put out a great single. This is not the case for “The Vengeful One.” Even without the pent up demand for new Disturbed music, it’s highly likely that this song would have shot up the charts anyway. It’s just that damn good!
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.
SPIN IT…
ASKING ALEXANDRIA – “I Won’t Give In”
FROM ASHES TO NEW – “Lost & Alone”
ART OF ANARCHY – “Til The Dust Is Gone”
WOVENWAR – “Tempest”
EVE TO ADAM – “Calling My Name”
DROP IT…
Mumford & Sons – “The Wolf”
Royal Blood – “Little Monster”
Zac Brown Band – “Heavy Is The Head”
Muse – “Dead Inside”
The Struts – “Could Have Been Me”
THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
If you recall the scene at the top of the Mediabase Active Rock Airplay chart last week, then you pretty much know the scene this week as well. Breaking Benjamin backs into an 8th consecutive week at #1 despite losing over 7% of their airplay. They hold on to the top spot because there was virtually no movement at all in the spin counts of any song in the neighborhood behind them. The order of the top seven songs in the chart remained completely unchanged from the previous week, meaning that Theory Of A Deadman , Royal Blood and Three Days Grace are still next in line to move to the top.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
As stagnant as the highest part of the chart was for the week, the next level down saw plenty of action, with Five Finger Death Punch continuing to climb with “Jekyll And Hyde,” the abrupt return of Disturbed producing an immediate impact on airplay with “The Vengeful One,” and Of Mice & Men slipping into the Top 20…
Red Sun Rising leads a trio of songs into the Top 30 for the first time with their debut single – “The Otherside.” Joining them as new entries into the Top 30 are double-digit position gainers I Prevail and P.O.D. …
Likewise, three songs climb a tier into the Top 40 this week, including the latest single from Red, who oddly climbed five positions despite literally zero change in their number of spins for the week…
The final ten spots on the chart include six tracks that weren’t in the Top 50 a week ago, with artists ranging from familiar names (Buckcherry, We Are Harlot) to virtual newcomers on the national scene (New Year’s Day, Within Reason).
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
MOVING UP
Pop Evil – “Footsteps”
Five Finger Death Punch – “Jekyll And Hyde”
Disturbed – “The Vengeful One”
DROPPING DOWN
Breaking Benjamin – “Failure”
Zac Brown Band – “Heavy Is The Head”
Apocalyptica – “Cold Blood”
FUTURES REPORT
The chart is an utterly mixed bag. The top spots are woefully stagnant, meaning that a lot of radio stations have sounded largely like they’re stuck on an endless repeating loop for more than a month. That’s a sharp contrast to the rest of the chart where there’s an unusually high amount of movement in terms of titles (if not necessarily in amount of airplay) for all but the most elite songs. Generally speaking, a lot of songs are getting played, but only by a few stations each. The breakouts in the future will be the ones that manage to cobble together broader support (which may seem obvious). Few are able to do so lately, but those that can garner broader support will likely find themselves with exceptionally high chart positions.
WRAP-UP
That’s all for this week. Tune in to HardRockDaddy.com every Tuesday for the HRD Radio Report. \m/
