PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK by Adam Waldman
SAINT ASONIA – “Better Place”
At the height of the success of Three Days Grace, Adam Gontier shocked everyone by leaving the band. Active Rock radio’s love affair with Three Days Grace has continued since Gontier was replaced by frontman, Matt Walst (My Darkest Days). Things got interesting this week, as Gontier’s new band, Saint Asonia, cracked the Top 50 with their debut single, “Better Place.” The song is much more raw and edgy than Three Days Grace, which is something that Gontier promised to deliver upon his return. You don’t need a psychology degree to figure out that the lyrics are a direct shot across the bow of his former bandmates. Time will tell if the song gets the support to go head-to-head with Three Days Grace, but it is certainly worthy of making an extended run. Because the band also features Mike Mushok (Staind) on guitar, Rich Beddoe (Finger Eleven) on drums and Corey Lowery (Dark New Day, Eye Empire) on bass, they will be slapped with the “supergroup” label, but the undeniable chemistry between them gives hope that Saint Asonia is in this for the long-haul, and not just a one-off project.
***NEW FEATURE***
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.
SPIN IT…
GLORIOUS SONS – “Heavy”
3 YEARS HOLLOW – “Chemical Ride”
ART OF ANARCHY – “Til The Dust Is Gone”
EVE TO ADAM – “Calling My Name”
WOVENWAR – “Tempest”
DROP IT…
Awolnation – “Hollow Moon”
Mumford & Sons – “The Wolf”
Zac Brown Band – “Heavy Is The Head”
In This Moment – “Sex Metal Barbie”
Amaranthe – “Drop Dead Cynical”
THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
Little change in airplay for any of the top five songs, so “Failure” by Breaking Benjamin remains at #1 on the Mediabase Active Rock Airplay chart for a fourth consecutive week. That’s the longest stay at the top for any song since “I Am Machine” ended a six-week stay for Three Days Grace in early March. Zac Brown Band (f. Chris Cornell) remains #2, and Theory Of A Deadman gets passed by Royal Blood for #3.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
As expected, both Halestorm and Seether continue their climb, both breaking into the Top 10 this week…
Thousand Foot Krutch backs into the Top 20 on a week with slightly decreased airplay…
The big move inside the Top 20 comes from “Dead Inside” by Muse, up 7 places with more than 20% spin growth…
Kill It Kid breaks into the Top 30 for the first time in their career …
Three songs move into the lower part of the Top 40, including another strong movement week for the latest single from All That Remains (“For You”)…
Supergroup Saint Ansonia makes their Top 50 debut with “Better Place,” joined by I Prevail’s cover of “Blank Space”. The latter narrowly missed breaking into the chart back in early February of this year and first started showing radio activity all the way back in early January.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
MOVING UP
Halestorm – “Amen”
Seether – “Nobody Praying For Me”
Muse – “Dead Inside”
DROPPING DOWN
Slash – “Bent To Fly”
Temperance Movement – “Take It Back”
Awolnation – “Hollow Moon”
FUTURES REPORT
The top five songs are largely keeping pace with each other, making it both hard to predict which will slip next, and hard to foresee any significant change in the heavy rotations at radio stations for the next several weeks. While a bit stagnant, luckily for listeners, at least several of those songs are still (relatively) young and aren’t quite as burned out as songs in this situation tend to be.
WRAP-UP
That’s all for this week. Tune in to HardRockDaddy.com every Tuesday for the HRD Radio Report. \m/
