PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK by Adam Waldman
HANDS LIKE HOUSES – “I Am”
Australian rockers, Hands Like Houses, describe themselves as “Rock/Experimental” on their Facebook page, which may be one of the reasons that their single, “I Am,” was such an attention-grabber when it was played on SiriusXM’s Octane this week. While the song contains elements that make it a good fit for Active Rock radio, it also has a unique quality that is somewhat difficult to pinpoint. In a day and age where there is so much similarity in the format, there is an even greater value on finding songs that rise above the din and inspire you to instantaneously turn up the volume. Based on the relatively low number of spins that it takes to crack the Top 50 Active Rock songs on any given week, it is clear that radio has not yet caught on to a band that they absolutely should. Although this track has some how managed to fly below radio’s radar, it has certainly captured the attention of music fans (over 500,000 YouTube views since March 15th). “I Am” is one of the more dynamic tracks to come along recently, straddling the line between powerful, intense rage and infectious melody. If this is what the “Rock/Experimental” genre sounds like, then we need more bands to classify themselves as such and take a chance to push the creative envelope.
THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
Zac Brown Band (f. Chris Cornell) remains atop the Mediabase Active Rock Airplay chart this week with “Heavy Is The Head,” although the clock is definitely ticking on their stay. Breaking Benjamin clearly has chart-topping momentum, with almost a 20 percent increase in spins for their latest single, “Failure,” which has clearly been anything but, and appears poised to claim the top position shortly. Things are shaping up for Breaking Benjamin to remain at the summit for several weeks, but if radio decides to go in a different direction quickly, there are a variety of options including a resurgent Bring Me The Horizon or reliable choice in Three Days Grace. A pair of red-hot debuts in the middle of the chart could also be next in line if Breaking Benjamin’s run turns out to be an extended one.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
No new arrivals in the Top 10 this week, and only one breakthrough in the Top 20 where “Jenny” proves to be a hit for Nothing More…
The Top 30 includes the week’s highest debuting song with Halestorm’s second single from the new album, “Amen”…
Another debuting single, “Nobody Praying For Me,” from Seether, provides the only other new entrant in the Top 40 this week…
Three songs arrive (or return) in the final spots in the Top 50, including the third single (“Halo”) from the debut album by Starset…
If you’re keeping score at home, that’s eleven songs that have debuted in the Top 50 over the past two weeks (noticeably more than usual).
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
MOVING UP
Breaking Benjamin – “Failure”
Nothing More – “Jenny”
Halestorm – “Amen”
DROPPING DOWN
Offspring – “Coming For You”
Halestorm – “Apocalyptic”
Incubus – “Absolution Calling”
FUTURES REPORT
A lot of heavy hitters scattered throughout the chart already, and more are due to arrive (new Five Finger Death Punch album & single among things to come). At least the early part of summer could find itself dominated by established artists.
WRAP-UP
