THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
“A game of inches” is a phrase most associated with sports but it certainly seems to apply to music occasionally as well. By a total of 2 spins (out of nearly 4,000 between them), Foo Fighters’ “Something From Nothing” returns to the top spot of the Mediabase Active Rock airplay chart, reclaiming the title from Five Finger Death Punch after two weeks. So ends a year that saw 16 songs from 13 bands reach the #1 spot for an average stay of between 3-4 weeks.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
Nearly six months after it arrived in the top 50, “Moving On” by Asking Alexandria cracks the Top 10 with solid gains, especially strong showing considering the age of the single … Surely notable this week is the fact that the same fifty songs comprise the Top 50 for a second straight week. Not a single debut, not a single song dropping out, just some shuffling of the deck.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
MOVING UP
Asking Alexandria – “Moving On”
Marilyn Manson – “Deep Six”
Bring Me The Horizon – “Drown”
DROPPING DOWN
Linkin Park f. Daron Malakian “Rebellion”
Bush “Way Around Is Through”
Thousand Foot Krutch “Born This Way”
JL’s PICK OF THE WEEK
SAVING ABEL – “Blood Stained Revolution”
In the year since losing a lead vocalist and a drummer on the same day, Saving Abel has shown not only remarkable perseverance, but perhaps provided a road map to navigating troubled waters. Amongst rock’s busiest road warriors, the band has not only survived the challenge, but seems to have almost thrived on it. While making the transition appear almost seamless, Saving Abel turned a situation that often destroys lesser bands into an opportunity to grow. The title track from their first album with new singer, Scotty Austin, and new drummer, Steven Pulley, is a worthy addition to their catalog.
I CALL B#LL$HIT!
The year concludes with the same four not-active-rock songs polluting the chart. Sigh. Fall Out Boy, Black Keys, Smashing Pumpkins and Arctic Monkeys once again amassed nearly 1,000 spins – enough to make a top 10 song – despite there being no shortage of quality songs that deserve that airplay.
FUTURES REPORT
In the next HRD Radio Report,we’ll see who starts the year off with a bang and hope for signs that active rock radio is ready to be “active” again after a rather slow end to 2014. In the meantime, I’ll lift a glass and wish you all a happy and prosperous New Year.
WRAP-UP
That’s all for this week, and this year! Here’s hoping that all HRD Radio Report readers enjoy a happy and safe New Year celebration. We thank you for your support, and hope to bring you even more good things to come in 2015! Tune in to HardRockDaddy.com every Tuesday for the HRD Radio Report. \m/

The final HRD Radio Report includes a (sort of) new #1 Active Rock song, a look at the (sort of) new Active Rock Top 50, and a rockin’ tune from Saving Abel as my Pick of the Week.
