PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
THE PRETTY RECKLESS – “And So It Went”
I don’t envy the youth of today. For all of the technological advances that they enjoy, they have spent nearly the past decade faced with a grim reality that has robbed them of their collective innocence. Gone are the days of blissful ignorance that so many of us enjoyed in our youth. The younger generations are fully aware of how fucked up the world is, and became so a young age. How could they not realize when many of them have been participating in active shooter drills since they started school? But it’s not just the school shootings that are a regular part of their everyday lives. There is so much more.
In a recent interview, Taylor Momsen said…
“The world has been in such a state of civil unrest. ‘And So It Went’ basically comes from that vision. As a songwriter, I feel like I’m not here to preach. I use music to observe and communicate what I see around me. This song felt like the perfect storm for Tom Morello to join in and rip the sound waves apart with his guitar.”
Though this powerful song leaves enough to the imagination to not definitively take sides, the presence of one of the most politically outspoken artists of a generation in Morello tipped the scales a bit in my eyes. And that’s a good thing.
As a parent, I have been horrified by the injustices that my kids have had to experience throughout their lifetimes. Our dinner conversations in recent years have not been of the mundane variety. Often times, we are discussing the injustices of the world, more specifically, the despicable behavior that we have witnessed over the past four years as the injustices have been magnified.
Momsen’s gritty, soulful, genuine vocals from the heart make you feel the message of this song in a visceral way. Morello’s guitar adds the perfect amount of “rage” to a song that is meant to provoke thought.
