PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
VEER – “Red Tide”
With all of the competition in hard rock these days, artists have to do whatever they can to rise above the din and get noticed. For some, that involves swinging for the fences to carve out their piece of a shrinking pie on radio. Others, like Veer, take a more grassroots approach by building a regional following and marketing themselves in creative way. You may think that having a common word as a band name would make that more challenging, but they have a logo that is so recognizable, that you would think that they took the Nike approach to marketing, rather than following the herd.Of course, all of the marketing in the world won’t mean a thing unless you can back it up with a quality product. Veer has delivered that since their inception, and continue with their evolution to today’s sound.
“Red Tide” was written during the pandemic that stopped the world, and live music, in its tracks. Frontman Ron Malfi shared the background for the song in a recent interview…
“We recorded this song during a worldwide viral pandemic, so it’s hard to ignore that. Something that profound works its way into the music, whether you want it to or not. We knew that going in, and we just owned it. For us, ‘Red Tide’ is practically an anthem for our place in time. It’s a snapshot of what’s going on in the world.”
Veer has always leaned into their grunge influences, but “Red Tide” takes a deeper dive into the dark side with an underlying eeriness that captures the essence of the toll that this pandemic has taken on so many of us. Through the darkness, the melodic chorus offers ray of hope that feels like the light at the end of the tunnel. Sonically, this is Veer’s best work yet.
