PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
MAMMOTH WVH – “Distance”
Generally speaking, 2020 will be forever remembered as a year of loss. More specifically, 2020 will be remembered as the year that we lost one of the greatest guitarists in music history when Eddie Van Halen succumbed to cancer. In a year that was already a sea of despair for many, this loss felt like the equivalent of a crushing tsunami for so many. It’s a loss that has lingered for a longer time than most because Van Halen was such a beloved icon.
As much as the loss was painful for the fans, it pales in comparison to the loss felt by his son, Wolfgang. Having been through the tragic loss of my father at around the same age as Wolfgang, I can empathize with the tremendous void that is left behind. The passage of time helps dull the pain, but the emptiness never really goes away, especially when the bond is strong. There is no doubt that, as great of a guitarist as Eddie Van Halen was, he may have been an even better father. I don’t think that most people realized it until watching the heartbreaking video for Wolfgang’s tribute song, “Distance.”
It’s no surprise that the song went viral in a way that few others ever have. The inner strength that it took to write, record, and release this song so soon after his father’s passing is something to behold. As good as the song is, it’s the home video that shows how loving Eddie Van Halen was from the moment that Wolfgang was born up until his dying day. I’ve yet to read anyone talking about the video without at least getting choked up, if not outright bawling.
It’s never easy to let a loved one go, much less one who was such an influential part of your life. The distance can seem infinite at times, but the part of the loved one that remains inside your heart and acts as a guiding force as time marches on, is something that can never be extinguished. Wolfgang did an amazing job of conveying that message in a song that shows that he is far more talented that he is given credit for.
