PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
RA – “Intercorrupted”
The seven-year wait for new music from Ra ended this week with the release of “Intercorrupted,” the title track off of their upcoming 2021 release. They could have come back with a song that was specifically geared for radio airplay, but they clearly had much more in mind based on the video which feels like a short film. “Intercorrputed” makes a thought-provoking statement that is unique in its perspective.
“With everyone releasing songs about the state of the world in 2020, we felt that there was an opportunity to say something about the state of the mind. Divisiveness does not exist in a vacuum. Your cause most certainly results in an effect, making it impossible to truly cast blame for the things currently that we are all up in arms against. Your personal beliefs require an adversary or contrary opinion in order to germinate in the current world of social media and sensational news coverage. We are part of the global synapses in this hivemind world. I believe there is little hope to evolve as a species if we don’t redefine and accept our own role in creating the very things that we abhor. We are intertwined. We are intercorrupted” said frontman Sahaj Ticotin.
It may sound cliche, but this whole concept falls under the category of “thinking man’s metal,” a term often used for progressive acts. But it makes sense, given that Ticotin is influenced by Queensryche. In fact, though he has kept busy with producing, the last song that I remember hearing during this extended hiatus was his brilliant acoustic cover of “The Mission.”
“Intercorrupted” has the sonic quality that you often hear on Active Rock Radio, albeit with more layers, impassioned vocals, and harmonies in a hook that lingers in your mind long after the song ends. The layoff between records was extremely long, but based on the title track, it certainly seems like the album will be worth the wait for Ra fans.
