PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
MAJA SHINING – “Familiar Taste Of Poison”
For my money, Lzzy Hale is the female rock vocalist against which all others are measured. It’s the combination of her incredible voice, charismatic style, songwriting ability, and old school rock and roll bravado that separates her from the rest. There is a reason that she has done duets with many of the top male vocalists in rock today. Hale embraces everything that you love about rock and roll singers. Her covers with Halestorm are always as memorable as their original work.
Forever Still singer Maja Shining turns the tables on Hale with her new YouTube channel by covering Halestorm’s “Familiar Taste Of Poison” using nothing more than her beautiful, powerful voice and sparse keyboards. The simple video features the Danish powerhouse singing in a room that looks very much like the setting for performances that have become all too familiar since the world went on lockdown in recent times. That’s all that was necessary to showcase a voice that, by all rights, should make her a household name in rock today. The haunting beauty of Shining’s vocals takes this already emotive song to an entirely different level. It may seem like sacrilege to say that this cover is as good as the original, but it absolutely is. Personally speaking, I can’t wait to see what else Shining does with her new YouTube channel.
