PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH – “Brighter Side Of Grey”
Music is often a great escape, but every once in a while, a song comes into your life at such a perfect time, it’s as if it was sent from the heavens above. Five Finger Death Punch’s “Brighter Side Of Grey” could not have come along at a more opportune time for me.
The song is written from the perspective of a loved one who passed away…a note from the great beyond if you will. It’s poignant for anyone who has suffered the loss of a loved one, but even more so when that loss is being felt like an open wound.
It’s hard to say that a wound that was inflicted nearly two decades ago is fresh, but in some ways, it is. The passage of time has a way of eroding the sharp edges of a loss, but it does not take away the void that is left behind.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wanted to pick up the phone and call my dad over the past two decades. The man who taught me everything that I know about being a dad never got the chance to meet my children. The conversations that I have with him are always one-way, with the rare exceptions where he appears in my dreams. Even then, there always seems to be some underlying uneasiness, as if I know that the moment will be fleeting.
What I would give to have a letter from my dad that conveys the message contained within the lyrics of “Brighter Side Of Grey.”
Ivan Moody delivers raw emotion and rage like no one else, but there is also a deeper side to him, a more heartfelt emotional side. To me, “Brighter Side Of Grey” is the best song to show that side of Moody in Five Finger Death Punch’s illustrious career. To have a new song hit home so hard and become an instant favorite for a band like FFDP, it has to be pretty special. “Brighter Side Of Grey” is likely to be a song that becomes a fan favorite and a staple for the band going forward.
Today is another in a long line of birthdays that my dad has celebrated in heaven. Perhaps I’m biased because “Brighter Side Of Grey” hit home in such a personal way (with serendipitous timing) but I think that others will feel the same way when they listen to it. I’d be surprised if this song isn’t #1 on the charts sooner rather than later.
