PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
EVANESCENCE – “The Chain”
There’s a theatricality to Evanescence’s haunting cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain” that is partly due to Amy Lee’s unique vocal style, and partly due to the fact that it’s part of the soundtrack to the video game Gear 5. Rather than staying true to the original (which the band loves), they decided to “paint a dark and epic picture” with their take. According to Lee…“The lyrics make me feel the power of standing together against great forces trying to pull us apart, perhaps even from the inside.”
The original version of the song is carried by an instantly recognizable bass line, vocal harmonies, and a build up that takes the song from a moody intro to an upbeat rocking ending. Evanescence’s cover of “The Chain” stays more consistent throughout, with the changes coming courtesy of Lee’s emotive vocals. Soundtracks to video games today have become as important as movie soundtracks were when Fleetwood Mac released the original in 1977. It’s safe to say that a good portion of the people who discover this song on Gear 5 probably never heard the original (unless they listen to classic rock radio with their parents). While the song is getting radio play, it is likely to gain more exposure within the confines of the video game because there is less competition and more senses are engaged.
