PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
GREY DAZE – “What’s In The Eye”
Chester Bennington’s origin story is not what you might expect. Long before Linkin Park burst onto the scene with 2000’s smash hit album, Hybrid Theory, Bennington was in a lesser known band called Grey Daze. Despite being a skinny, nerdy kid, who was picked on in school, Bennington decided at a young age that he was going to be a rock star when he grew up. That journey began at the age of 15 when he met drummer Sean Dowdell, who was instantly blown away by Bennington’s vocal talent. Before joining the band, Bennington needed his father’s permission, which he got by assuring him that he would get his homework done. From that moment on, Dowdell became not only his bandmate, but also a protective big brother of sorts.
Grey Daze began in 1993, and broke up in 1998. In 2003, Bennington and Dowdell became partners in Club Tattoo, a tattoo/piercing/lifestyle shop that now has six locations in Arizona and Las Vegas. While touring with Linkin Park in 2017, Bennington called Dowdell from the road and said that he wanted to throw a Club Tattoo party. They hadn’t had one in years. He also said that he wanted to put Grey Daze back together to play at the party. Rehearsals were set to begin in July of 2017 when Bennington came off the road. On July 20, 2017, Bennington’s life ended tragically.
Eventually, Dowdell decided to finish the album and make his dearly departed friend proud. He wanted to involve musicians that Bennington admired (including his children who never got the chance to record with him before his untimely passing). Unlike most recordings, this album had to be reverse engineered. It started with Bennington’s vocals, followed by the rest of the vocal arrangement, and then finally the foundation of bass and drums behind it. Many fans didn’t even realize that it was Bennington on vocals. His style with Grey Daze (especially on “What’s In The Eye”) is less about in-your-face angst, and more about the type of soulful introspection that came out of Seattle in the ’90s.
Maybe it’s because the release of the remastered version of “What’s In The Eye” came on the heels of Neil Peart’s shocking passing, but to me, the opening of the song has some of the same pensive sadness of “Twilight Zone.” As it progresses, you can feel the spirit of bands like Temple Of The Dog and Mother Love Bone creating an emotional stir. As much as “What’s In The Eye” takes you back in time to the early ’90s, this updated version breathes new life into the song making it feel fresh and relevant on Active Rock radio. Bennington’s mom was understandably brought to tears when she heard this incredibly powerful song for the first time.
