PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
DISTURBED – “Hold On To Memories”
Deciding upon the final featured song of the year was different than the past because it is also the final featured song of the decade. It felt like it shouldn’t just be business as usual, but there was no song that felt like it captured the spirit of closure. And then, in a moment of rock and roll serendipity, Disturbed released a live video of “Hold On To Memories.” Although this is a featured song review, in this case, the video is equally important.
“Hold On To Memories” is not just about looking back at the past, but using those memories as a launching pad to the future. Tinged with bittersweet melancholy, this beautiful acoustic song of hope reminded me of the message that Robin Williams delivered in Dead Poets Society… “CARPE DIEM!” (seize the day). The loss of the iconic comedic genius this decade is a reminder that time is our most precious commodity. This was a decade of great loss in the music world as well, some by their own hand because the pain of living was more than they could bear, others by natural causes (quite possibly exacerbated by years of rock and roll living).
Disturbed usually inspires with in-your-face anthems, but with “Hold On To Memories,” they take a more introspective approach.
