PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
PHIL CAMPBELL (f. DEE SNIDER, MICK MARS, CHRIS FEHN) – “These Old Boots”
In April of 2000, Saturday Night Live first aired the classic “more cowbell” skit. It left an indelible mark on the fabric of pop culture. You know what Active Rock playlists can use to freshen things up? MORE COWBELL! Former Slipknot drummer Chris Fehn delivers just that on “These Old Boots” (off of Phil Campbell’s first solo album – Old Lions Still Roar). The song – which also features guest vocals by Dee Snider and Mick Mars on guitar – is a straight-forward, no-nonsense, in-your-face, timeless blues rocker with just the right amount of grit and swagger. Keeping with the theme of the album, “These Old Boots” sends a message to the world that these legendary rockers still have plenty of gas left in the tank.
Motorhead received limited airplay on Active Rock radio; Motley Crue’s only came on the heels of the wildly popular biopic – The Dirt, and Twisted Sister is relegated strictly to Classic Rock radio, so it’s no guarantee that these “old lions” will make any noise now. However, in a format that has become increasingly stale, this is just what the doctor ordered to spice things up a bit. There is still plenty of tread left on “These Old Boots.” The next generation of rock music fans deserve the opportunity to discover that when they tune in.
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (By Adam Waldman)
Volbeat plateaued this week, declining by a minimal amount of spins, but they still hold a comfortable lead over Disturbed. Unless Volbeat starts dropping swiftly, it will take at least another few weeks to be dethroned by Disturbed. There is an outside chance that Greta Van Fleet can gain momentum and make things interesting, but they’re likely at least a month away from topping the chart.
