PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
ALTER BRIDGE – “Wouldn’t You Rather”
Over the course of the past 15 years, Alter Bridge has been remarkably consistent (releasing albums every three years like clockwork), while also evolving as time passes. This evolution can be heard in both the band’s sound and their lyrics.
Myles Kennedy has always had an uplifting quality to his voice, but his lyrics have often times been heart wrenching (in a good way). Life changes for each of us as we enter different stages. Ideally, wisdom goes hand-in-hand with aging. As the sands of time continue to fall, you start to appreciate things that you might not have earlier on.
“Wouldn’t You Rather” – the lead single off of the band’s upcoming sixth studio release (Walk The Sky) – features the dark edginess of the Fortress album, and combines it with the uplifting lyrics of “My Champion.” It’s the perfect blend of dark and light.
It’s easy to get caught up in the rat race and focus primarily on the all-mighty dollar, but as the saying goes…“money isn’t everything.” This life lesson becomes clearer when you’re faced with more yesterdays than tomorrows. “Wouldn’t You Rather” tackles this subject head-on with a poignant message that living from the heart and following your passion is more meaningful when all is said and done. Money can always be replaced…time cannot.
The Alter Bridge formula of working on separate projects in between three-year album cycles continues to pay enormous dividends. Each album has a fresh, energetic sound. Based on this lead single, you have to imagine that this streak will continue this time around.
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (By Adam Waldman)
As predicted last week, Bad Wolves knocked Shinedown from the top spot this week. Well, sort of… Although there is a new #1 this week, “Remember When” rose to the top despite a slight decline in spins. This does not inspired confidence that this run will have any legs. With a less than 200-spin lead over Godsmack, there is a decent chance that there will be another new #1 next week. If not, then it’s a near certainty that the change at the top will come the following week.
