PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
SUM 41 – “Out For Blood”
It doesn’t matter whether you think of Sum 41 as punk, pop punk, skater punk, or something else. The bottom line is that “Out For Blood” is a song that transcends any sub-genre in a way that is both edgy and fun. This is exactly the kind of music that is needed to escape the news and the palpable tension that seems to be pervading society today. Ironically, the song seems to be tackling that very issue. However, it is done in a way that conjures up the joyful defiance and “us against the world” mentality that is the foundation upon which punk rock is built. Is it a case of misery loves company? Perhaps, but at its core, “Out For Blood” feels more like a unifying anthem than anything else. It is not your typical Active Rock sound, but that shouldn’t be a deterrent for programmers to put it in heavy rotation.
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (By Adam Waldman)
Sometimes it feels like the predictions made here are like shooting fish in a barrel, but every once in a while, there is real intrigue and surprise. This was one of those weeks. It looked like there was a real possibility of Pop Evil “being legendary” and scoring another #1 single. Instead, it looks like a Five Finger Death Punch was delivered to them, leaving them black and blue, or “Blue On Black” as the case may be. FFDP soared, while Pop Evil plummeted. It doesn’t take a giant leap to see that the spins shifted from one song to the other. What looked like a rock solid top 5 for the coming weeks will end this week. FFDP is the hottest song on the charts at the moment, and will continue to rise in the coming weeks. It looks like the next #1 will be Badflower once Black Keys is done at the top. If the current trend continues, “Blue On Black” will pose a threat sooner rather than later.
