PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
DREAM THEATER – “Paralyzed”
With the exception of 1992’s “Pull Me Under” (off of Images And Words), Dream Theater has built a career that spans three decades without being accessible to mainstream audiences. Often times referred to as “musicians’ musicians” due to their complex brand of progressive rock, the band (whose roots can be traced back to Berklee College Of Music) is as well known as you can be without having songs known by the masses.
Though there are some elements of today’s modern rock, “Paralyzed” clearly delineates itself from virtually anything that you’ll hear on Active Rock radio (in a good way). At just over four minutes long, “Paralyzed” doesn’t feature the numerous time signature changes that you expect from a Dream Theater song, but there are enough prog elements to satiate the band’s existing fanbase while being accessible to a much wider audience. The undeniable darkness of the bottom-heavy groove is brightened by some more contemplative bittersweet moments.
In today’s rock climate, it’s hard to imagine “Paralyzed” making the same kind of splash that “Pull Me Under” made in ’92, but it is certainly worthy of garnering radio airplay.
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (By Adam Waldman)
Three Days Grace will be replaced as the #1 song next week. They were only had a 5-spin advantage over the #3 song this week, and a 3-spin advantage over the #2 song. The battle for #1 next week will take place between Pop Evil and Black Keys, and quite possibly, Badflower (who is well within striking distance if either of the top 2 slip).
