PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
ROYAL BLISS – “Pain”
One of the most versatile modern rock bands in recent memory is also one of the most underrated. If generic active rock is a puddle of standing water, Royal Bliss is a free flowing river filled with unexpected twists and turns. In recent times, the band has seamlessly vacillated between a southern rock sound with country flair to classic hard rock that harkens back to the ’80s to their current single which seems to be right in the active rock pocket. But there is nothing generic about “Pain.” Buoyed by an atypical, staccato riff, this song grabs your attention from the first note. At times, it has a melodic Papa Roach vibe.
Just like the band itself, Neal Middleton is one of the most underrated, versatile vocalists in rock today. Soulful and emotive are the words that best describe his style. On “Pain,” Middleton delivers his customary excellence, and even throws in some angsty little growls for emphasis. Without missing a beat, he then offers up a poignant moment when the song downshifts in a manner similar to Highly Suspect’s debut single (“Lydia”). To their credit, Royal Bliss never chases radio trends. The end result may be less attention at radio than they deserve, but solace in knowing that they write songs from the heart that resonate with fans. Unless programmers are asleep at the wheel, “Pain” should make a nice run up the charts.
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (By Adam Waldman)
It could just be a one-week breather, but all four songs at the top of the chart had modest gains, leaving Disturbed as the clear #1. However, Three Days Grace trails by less than 200 spins, so that gap could be closed at any time with a coordinated drop by Disturbed and renewed momentum by the current #2. If this treading water pattern holds, Disturbed could coast for at least a few more weeks.

TRENDS & OBSERVATIONS
It’s easy enough to have a little fun with the notion of Motley Crue having a hit in 2019, but “The Dirt” actually still has a way to go before it is even their most successful song of the current millennium. The Billboard Mainstream Rock chart saw “If I Die Tomorrow” reach #4 in 2003, and “Saints of Los Angeles” hit #5 three years later.
