PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
ROYAL BLISS – “Hard & Loud”
There’s a lot that you can say about Royal Bliss. Being predictable is not one of them. Are they a soulful country rock band? Are they blues-based rockers? Are they a raucous rock and roll band that you’d like to party with? The answer to all of these questions is a resounding YES! To some, Neal Middleton and company might seem like a band that is a bit schizophrenic, but to me, this is merely a band that writes music for themselves knowing that they have a fanbase that accepts them regardless of which direction they take. The common themes in their music are a southern influence, passion, and outstanding songwriting/performing. Not only is this band atypical in their lack of conforming to get radio airplay, they don’t even conform to allow themselves to be placed into any sub-genre.
That being said, their latest single, “Hard & Loud,” is a southern-tinged, arena rocker that takes you back in time to the debaucherous days of rock and roll. This fist-pumping anthem is quite a diversion from “Devil With Angel Eyes” (which was featured on HRD Radio Report earlier this year). I’d like to say that this song will get significant radio traction, but radio never seems to give Royal Bliss the attention that they deserve. Don’t wait for radio to discover one of the more underrated bands in rock today. Use “Hard & Loud” as an opportunity to listen to the band (if you haven’t already), and then go back and check out their catalog. You will not be disappointed.
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (By Adam Waldman)
Shinedown has a clear to reach #1 now that Disturbed started to drop. It’s a virtual lock that they get there next week. The only thing that could realistically stop it from happening next week is the Thanksgiving holiday malaise. Based on recent history, you have to think that Bad Wolves will get their shot at the top before 2018 comes to a close. Unless something drastic happens, it’s hard to see a scenario where either Shinedown or Bad Wolves will top the charts to close out the year. No other songs are even within striking distance at this point.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.
