PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
SHINEDOWN – “GET UP”
Soft piano intros and the Active Rock format do not go hand-in-hand. In fact, they are almost unheard of. However, Shinedown can do it successfully because of their previous track record, and more importantly, because of the brilliant, soulful, unique vocals of Brent Smith. Whereas much of Active Rock is about tapping into at least a hint of angst, Shinedown excels at incorporating a healthy dose of beauty into melodic, poetic lyrics. It’s one of the many things that makes the band stand out above most others. What makes Shinedown even more special is a sense of dynamics that allows them to seamlessly transition between soft touching emotion and powerful heavy intensity.
“GET UP” is another in a long line of inspired Shinedown songs that deservedly grabs the “ATTENTION ATTENTION” of radio programmers and rock music fans alike. Simply put, Active Rock radio is just better when Shinedown is releasing singles off of a new album. Beyond the sonic appeal of the song is the positive inspiration of the lyrics, and the feelings of hope that wash over you with Smith’s vocals.
It seems that a number of bands these days are inspired by Shinedown, but for my money, there is nothing that comes close to the original.
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (By Adam Waldman)
Last week it was predicted that “Halestorm’s run on top is likely to be short-lived, as they make way for Five Finger Death Punch.” That is EXACTLY what happened this week, and Halestorm immediately started dropping after peaking at #1 last week. FFDP takes over the top spot, but only leads Three Days Grace and Breaking Benjamin by around 150 spins. Based on the current trend, that lead would hold, but if “Sham Pain” takes the same route as Halestorm’s “Uncomfortable,” it’s not out of the realm of possibility that this is a one-week stay on top. With the momentum that Disturbed currently has with their latest single, it looks like a quick rotation at the top might be necessary to give all of the heavy hitters bragging rights for a #1 single.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.
SPIN IT…
GODSMACK – “When Legends Rise”
ROYAL TUSK – “Aftermath”
JUDAS PRIEST – “No Surrender”
AVATAR – “The King Welcomes You To Avatarland”
STONE HORSES – “End Of The World”
MONSTER TRUCK – “Evolution”
ATREYU – “In Our Wake”
SEVENDUST – “Unforgiven”
DROP IT…
Twenty One Pilots – “Jumpsuit”
Imagine Dragons – “Natural”
Grandson – “Blood/Water”
Kulick – “Ghost”
Glorious Sons – “S.O.S.”
Foo Fighters – “The Line”
The Struts – “Body Talks”
Amity Affliction – “Feels Like I’m Dying”
THE BREAKDOWN (by Jon Loveless)
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
Nothing More is new to the Top 10 this week, gaining one position despite flat airplay…
Three songs enter the Top 20, led by Shinedown who enjoyed over 60% spin growth…
There’s also a trio of new entries in the Top 30, with Alice In Chains leading the way with more than double their airplay of the previous week…
Four songs break into the Top 40, including the week’s highest debuting single from newcomers The Blue Stones…
There’s three other songs entering the Top 50 this week, but only one is actually new to the chart. That’d be the next single from Messer, “Save Myself.”
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
RISING
Shinedown – “Get Up”
Bring Me The Horizon – “MANTRA”
Disturbed – “Are You Ready?”
FALLING
Ghost – “Rats”

TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
Nice to see Messer break into the published chart after slow (but steady) progress since the first adds were reported seven weeks ago.
