PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
SAM COFFEY & THE IRON LUNGS – “Tough”
The boys are back in town! Ok, with Black Star Riders, the spirit of Thin Lizzy has never truly gone away, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t room for more music in the same vein. Sam Coffey & The Iron Lungs is a six-piece rock and roll outfit from Toronto. These Canadian rockers released their debut album last summer. There isn’t a lot of information available about the band on their website or social media, but piecing things together, you get the feeling that this is a band that prides themselves on tapping into the nostalgic rock and roll days of yesteryear. This is not just because their latest single, “Tough,” has a distinct Thin Lizzy feel (although that’s a big part of it).
Bands like Steel Panther tap into the same spirit, albeit in a comedic, ironic kind of way. I can’t say for sure, but seeing the members of Sam Coffey & The Iron Lungs clad in matching denim vests seems more like a genuine homage to the ‘80s than a parody of it. Regardless of their image, this band plays the type of gin-soaked music that makes you want to head to a pub and hoist a few with your rock and roll friends. In a day and age where things feel increasingly serious, it’s nice to have bands like Sam Coffey & The Iron Lungs to remind us that rock and roll was once about having fun and bonding with like-minded people.
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (By Adam Waldman)
Godsmack didn’t make the jump to #1 this week with “Bulletproof,” but they should leapfrog both Bad Wolves and Shinedown next week to take over the top spot. With around a 600-spin lead over “Rats” by Ghost, Sully Erna and company looked poised for a multi-week run at the top. Is Guns N’ Roses destined for a number one song? Based on this week’s trend, it certainly appears so. They have a decent amount of ground to make up to catch Godsmack, Ghost, and Jonathan Davis, but “Shadow Of Your Love” (from their upcoming box set – Locked N’ Loaded) is flying up the charts, gaining 350 spins this week, and jumping into the top 10.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
Guns N’ Roses flies into the Top 10 with over 50% increased spins…
Foo Fighters enjoy a similar “spincrease” and jump into the Top 20…
In This Moment is new to the Top 30 this week, while Messer inches back into the tier, equaling their peak position from five weeks ago…
New to the Top 40 this week is the second single from the new Pop Evil album…
Only one song debuts in the entire published chart this week, that’s the solo debut from Shim (better known to most as Shimon Moore, former frontman for Sick Puppies).
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
RISING
Guns N’ Roses – “Shadow Of Your Love”
Ghost – “Rats”
Foo Fighters – “The Line”
FALLING
Pearl Jam – “Can’t Deny Me”
Nothing More – “Do You Really Want It?”
Three Days Grace – “The Mountain”
TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
Third straight week with the same songs in the top 3, which creates a logjam that causes a lot of songs to plateau. Red Sun Rising has been between #8 and #11 since early April for example, Dorothy has been stuck between #17 and #21 for nine weeks now, while Nothing More spent eight weeks at either #6 or #8 before now going through a steady descent down the chart and on their way out.
