PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
ZERO THEOREM – “Area”
You can just tell that some bands have that “it” factor from the first listen. Zero Theorem has a larger-than-life feel, and a seasoning that makes it seem like they are a veteran act. “Area” is the band’s first single, and their debut album isn’t coming out for a few more months, but you can already tell that they are likely to become an Active Rock staple artist. Based on the resume of their producer Kane Churko (Five Finger Death Punch, Papa Roach, In This Moment, etc.), it’s not surprising that Zero Theorem’s sound is in the sweet spot of accomplished modern hard rock acts. Musically, “Area” has the same vibe as Gemini Syndrome, but Caesar’s vocals are not at all similar to Aaron Nordstrom’s. However, he does have a unique sound, which usually bodes well for bands who want to stand out from others in a meaningful way. “Area” is simultaneously melodic and intense, powerful and driving, but with a catchy groove. Zero Theorem’s overall sound can best be described as “big.” This is the type of band that immediately makes you take notice when they are played on the radio. With a sound this intense, you have to imagine that the live show is something to see. “Area” is already gaining traction on the Active Rock radio chart. If this song is any indication of what’s the come, I suspect that you’ll be seeing more singles charting in the near future once the album is released.
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (By Adam Waldman)
As predicted, Papa Roach takes over the #1 position this week with “Born For Greatness.” It was also predicted last week that they would be challenged by Greta Van Fleet’s “Safari Song” within a few weeks. That challenge may come as soon as next week, given that the gap between the top 2 songs right now is less than 50 spins. Based on this week’s action, Papa Roach can actually increase their spin total by over 100 spins and still be surpassed by Greta Van Fleet, who had over 150 spins more than the new kings of the throne. If Pop Evil’s “Waking Lions” starts to gain a little more momentum, it won’t be long until there is a three-way battle at the top. The only song that has any really momentum beyond this trio is “The Mountain” (the latest single by Three Days Grace). However, they are still too far back to be considered a real threat at the moment.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN (by Jon Loveless)
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
Top 10 songs remain the same as last week, only shuffled in their order…
Only one change in the Top 20 songs, where Five Finger Death Punch replaces, uh, Five Finger Death Punch.
Jonathan Davis breaks into the Top 30 with nearly double the spins over last week, joined there by the latest single from A Day To Remember…
Ded enters the Top 40, as does the week’s highest debuting song from A Perfect Circle…
Two other songs debut this week, including the next single from Shaman’s Harvest, while a third track re-enters after a three week absence from the published chart.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
RISING
Greta Van Fleet – “Safari Song”
Three Days Grace – “The Mountain”
Five Finger Death Punch – “Gone Away”
FALLING
Five Finger Death Punch – “Trouble”
Royal Blood – “I Only Lie When I Love You”
Seether – “Betray And Degrade”
TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
I suppose congratulations are in order for Through Fire as “Where You Lie” reaches the six month mark on the published chart. Twenty six weeks ago, the song debuted at #43 on the airplay chart, and has remained between there and the current peak position of #21 the entire time. It’s not actually the oldest song on the chart this week though. Both Theory Of A Deadman and Seether actually have tracks that are even older, but both of those spent the majority of their stay in the Top 5. Crossover tune “Thunder” from Imagine Dragons, which re-entered the Active Rock chart this week, also debuted 26 weeks ago, but it was absent for most of the past month. Assuming that “Novacaine” from 10 Years makes it another week, it will join those songs in the “half a year” club.
