PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
MYLES KENNEDY – “The Year Of The Tiger”
Fans of Myles Kennedy have been blessed with his tireless effort that produces new music regularly, pulling double duty between Alter Bridge and Slash. While many were elated with the Guns N’ Roses reunion, others (like me) were left disappointed by having less of Kennedy’s brilliant vocals bringing incredible songs to life. The disappointment was short-lived when Kennedy released “Year Of The Tiger,” the title track off of his upcoming solo release.
Is “Year Of The Tiger” a fit on Active Rock? Some may not think so, but personally speaking, I am glad to see the song climbing up the chart. The song does not sound like Kennedy’s work with either Alter Bridge or Slash, but that doesn’t matter. To borrow a cliché, Kennedy could sing the phone book and it would be worthy of radio airplay.
These days, Active Rock bands being influenced by Led Zeppelin have managed to gain traction on radio, so why not Kennedy? If Greta Van Fleet can take radio by storm with a Zeppelin-esque sound, “Year Of The Tiger” deserves the same treatment. This is not to say that Kennedy is doing a Robert Plant imitation. His vocals on the song as distinct as ever. However, the underlying acoustic riff conjures up memories of “The Battle Of Evermore.”
SiriusXM’s Octane has a feature called “Unleaded” (acoustic performances of songs played regularly on the station). The only difference with this song is that the acoustic version is the original. In my opinion, neither Alter Bridge not Slash get as much attention as they deserve at Active Rock radio. Both should be in heavy rotation as much as possible. The same holds true for Kennedy’s first solo release!
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (By Adam Waldman)
With radio still seemingly in “holiday mode,” the movement at the top has been fairly stagnant. For the moment, Royal Blood remains on top, but any meaningful decrease in spins will leave them vulnerable to being overtaken by Seether, Theory Of A Deadman, or even Foo Fighters. That being said, all songs in the top 4 are basically treading water at this point. If this trend continues, it could be awhile before Royal Blood is dethroned. However, if things start to move once we get back to business as usual, their reign could end at any time because of the relatively small lead that they hold over the competition.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN (by Jon Loveless)
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
Papa Roach regains some momentum and returns to the Top 10 after slipping a bit last week…
Falling In Reverse and In This Moment are both new to the Top 20 this week, the former rising two spots despite losing a few spins versus the previous week…
Within Reason leads a pair of new arrivals to the Top 30…
Fozzy has another hit, leading a trio of songs new to the Top 40…
Four songs are in the Top 50 that were absent a week ago, but only one is actually debuting (the other three are re-entries). Breaking Benjamin arrives with a fairly strong showing out of the box.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
RISING
Royal Blood – “I Only Lie When I Love You”
Rise Against – “House On Fire”
Breaking Benjamin – “Red Cold River”
FALLING
Thirty Seconds To Mars – “Walk On Water”
Gary Clark Jr.– “Come Together”
Five Finger Death Punch – “Gone Away”
TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
More often than not, radio returns from the long holiday slowdown with a decent amount of movement. Not true in 2018 (at least not yet). Several songs linger on despite five months or longer on the chart, and there is only one actual debut in the first “normal” week for adds of the year.
WRAP-UP
