PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
FOZZY – “Painless”
Fozzy has already had nice success this year with the title track off of their latest album, Judas. If it feels like it’s been a long time since the band last released a single, it has. “Judas” was the pick of the week on the HRD Radio Report in May. The song proceeded to have a nice run at both Active Rock radio and on the Octane Big ‘Uns Countdown. In fact, the song finished at #7 on the Top 30 Octane Big ‘Uns Countdown Songs of 2017. Although “Judas” (the single) has been around for a good part of the year, the album was actually released in October, so there should be plenty of opportunities for more singles.
“Painless” – the band’s most recent single – made a strong debut on this week’s chart. Once again, Chris Jericho’s vocals conjure up thoughts of Ozzy’s distinct style, and the band delivers the type of energy that straddles the fence between classic rock and modern, Active Rock. Whether “Painless” has a run as strong as “Judas” remains to be seen, but it’s off to a good start so far.
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (By Adam Waldman)
As predicted last week, Royal Blood jumped up to #1 this week with “I Only Lie When I Love You.” Though their lead is less than a hundred spins over Seether’s “Betray And Degrade” (which jumped up to #2), it would be surprising to see their run at the top end quickly based on the total spins. It seems that there is still room to run. However, it wouldn’t be a total shock if Seether takes over quickly, given the recent trend of songs gaining fast momentum seemingly out of nowhere.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

The composition of the Top 30 remains unchanged with no notable movement within the tier…

TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
Holiday slowdown is no surprise this week, nor really any reason for concern in the bigger picture. It’s been an unsettling year for many fans of the Active Rock format, most likely for the artists as well. What 2018 will bring is anyone’s guess, but my hope would be that the format will refocus itself on being true to its rock name, and spend less time trying to be everything but rock. My thanks to you all for letting me be part of your 2017.
