PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH – “Gone Away”
Twenty years after The Offspring released “Gone Away,” one of the best “cover bands” in the world has released their interpretation of the song. Yes, I realize that FFDP is not a “cover band,” but they are the masters of taking other artists’ songs and making them their own. The band rarely disappoints in any regard, but they never seem to have a misstep when they are doing covers. Of course, when you’re one of the biggest bands in the world, there is little chance of being compared unfavorably to the original. Interestingly, as you listen to “Gone Away,” you’re more likely to be reminded of FFDP’s “Far From Home” than The Offspring’s original version of the song. Like he did in “Far From Home,” Ivan Moody makes you feel anguish in what can best be described as an FFDP power ballad (of sorts).
These days, it’s not unusual for the biggest bands in the rock genre will do a full album of covers. FFDP does them with regularity, but they sprinkle them in with their originals. It won’t be surprising if FFDP has even greater radio success than The Offspring did with “Gone Away” in the ‘90s.
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (By Adam Waldman)
As predicted (make that guaranteed) last week, Foo Fighters knocks off Nothing More to become the new #1 this week. What was not expected was the precipitous drop for Nothing More that allowed a sinking Theory Of A Deadman to “back into” the #2 spot (from # 3 last week). Given that the holidays traditionally put the Active Rock format on autopilot, it would be somewhat shocking if Foo Fighters don’t ride out the rest of 2017 on top. They have a seemingly insurmountable 700+ spin lead over the next song with any momentum (Royal Blood’s “I Only Lie When I Love You”). Unless there is a combination of a Seether surge and a major drop from Foo Fighters, it will be 2018 when the next #1 emerges.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN (by Jon Loveless)
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
Papa Roach moves up one position and into the Top 20 with their latest single. That’s the only change in composition in the top two segments of the chart since last week…
In This Moment enjoys solid growth and reaches the Top 30. Red also climbs a couple of spots despite almost flat airplay…
Dead Girls Academy cracks the Top 40 with their debut single…
The week’s only song making its debut on the published chart is from Beck. (U2 grabs the #50 spot, but that is it’s second re-entry onto the chart).
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
RISING
Royal Blood – “I Only Lie When I Love You”
Metallica – “Spit Out The Bone”
Stone Temple Pilots – “Meadow”
FALLING
Nothing More – “Go To War”
Fozzy – “Judas”
Biffy Clyro – “Wolves Of Winter”
TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
With only one song debuting on the chart this week, it looks as though the December doldrums may be officially underway (especially since that lone new entry is yet another Alternative hit being crossed over by a few radio stations).
WRAP-UP
That’s all for this week. Tune in to HardRockDaddy.com every Tuesday for the HRD Radio Report. \m/
