PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
SIN SHAKE SIN – “Can’t Go To Hell”
Call it what you want…boot stompin’ music, swamp rock…the bottom line is that it is entertaining, fun and uplifting. If you just want to hoist a few and pay no attention to the lyrics, “Can’t Go To Hell” provides an ideal happy hour soundtrack. However, if you do like to dig deeper into the lyrics (and I do), you’ll find a thought-provoking, no-holds-barred message about the state of the country. In fact, Sin Shake Sin is billed as “a political resistance alternative rock musical project.” You might be wondering why it’s being called a project and not a band. As you feel the energy of “Can’t Go To Hell,” it seems like a band with incredible chemistry. Usually the term “project” is used for a band that isn’t the primary focus for any of its members. But here’s the thing. Sin Shake Sin has only ONE member! The project is the brainchild of award-winning producer/songwriter, Stacy Hogan. The man who wrote, sang, recorded, produced and mix his own album has written for a number of major label artists across multiple genres. With such a diverse background, it’s fair to question how this song fits on Active Rock radio. It already cracked the Top 50 this week, and with good reason. A year or so ago, there was no precedent for this kind of music in the format. However, “Can’t Go To Hell” is in the same wheelhouse as Goodbye June’s “Oh No.” I have no idea why it took so long for this song to chart, but I’m glad that it did.
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (By Adam Waldman)
As predicted last week, Nothing More’s reign on the top is going to be short-lived. It almost feels like it was a coordinated effort to give “Go To War” the bragging rights of being #1 before moving on to the next chart-topper in Foo Fighters. The latter came within 8 spins of the top spot this week after Nothing More suffered a significant decline in spins. This one is a no-brainer. “The Sky Is A Neighborhood” will be the new #1 song next week. With no songs within realistic striking distance, Foo Fighters could ride the rest of 2017 on top if their spins remain flat. The next likely threat could come from Five Finger Death Punch, but they currently trail by over 1000 spins.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN (by Jon Loveless)
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
The new single from Five Finger Death Punch reaches the Top 10 in just the fourth week on the chart…
Metallica also continues to show early strength, cracking the Top 20 this week with the fifth hit single from their smash album…
Stone Temple Pilots have a fast moving hit, up sixteen spots to score the highest of two songs debuting in the Top 30…
The final three positions in the Top 50 are claimed by the week’s only published chart debuting songs, led by the latest from Deadset Society.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
RISING
Five Finger Death Punch – “Trouble”
Metallica – “Spit Out The Bone”
Stone Temple Pilots – “Meadow”
FALLING
Nothing More – “Go To War”
DED – “Remember The Enemy”
Mastodon – “Steambreather”
TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
Apparently, the low number of spins needed to reach the Top 50 last week was not a computer glitch. We can only hope that this doesn’t become “the new normal,” since scarce airplay limits the impact of radio for new artists (in particular), and that’s not good for the bands or for the format.
WRAP-UP
