PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
STONE TEMPLE PILOTS – “Meadow”
After an exhaustive search that felt like forever, Stone Temple Pilots finally revealed Jeff Gutt as the new lead singer. The announcement was made in coordination with the release of the band’s first single together, “Meadow.” The song has already made its debut on the Top 50 of the Active Rock chart. With all of the anticipation for new music from the band, it’s understandable why radio has jumped on this one early. The song itself sounds like classic STP. Gutt has a similar vibe to Scott Weiland, with just a hint of Josh Todd (Buckcherry). While there was a lot of anticipation to finally hear new music from the band, what they delivered was not a big diversion from what we’ve come to expect from STP. There’s nothing wrong with that. The formula for their sound wasn’t broken; their previous lead singers both were. After dealing with the roller coaster ride that was Weiland, and the departure of Chester Bennington (before he committed suicide), you have to imagine that what the band is hoping for at this point is “normal.” Based on the comfort of the sound of “Meadow,” it seems that they may be on the right track, provided that Gutt provides the complementary vocals without the drama and demons that came with STP’s two previous frontmen.
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (By Adam Waldman)
As predicted last week, Nothing More takes over the #1 position on this week’s chart. Although “Go To War” had a moderate spin increase, this rise to the top was due mostly to the decline in spins by Theory Of A Deadman. Because of that, it may not take too long for Foo Fighters to make this a short reign for Nothing More. With less than 250 spins separating the top two songs, it won’t take much to have a new #1. It could happen as early as next week if Nothing More starts to decline at all and Foo Fighters keep their momentum going. If Nothing More’s spin totals remain relatively flat, then it could take a few weeks for Foo Fighters to pass them. However, if Nothing More starts to decline next week, this could be a one-week stint at the top.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN (by Jon Loveless)
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
Starset and Skillet both slip into the Top 10, a pair of songs that debuted in the same week back in July and have been separated by no more than two spots for fifteen weeks in a row…
New to the Top 20 this week are Pop Evil and Trivium, the former arriving in just three short weeks on the chart (just like Five Finger Death Punch)…
Metallica leaps nearly twenty positions into the Top 30, not missing the next tier up by very much in fact, the highest of three new arrivals in the first thirty songs….
There’s a decidedly alternative flavor to the pair of songs cracking the Top 40, where Bush and Awolnation show up…
The final portion of the chart finds two debuts that might have people checking their calendar. The first chart single for Stone Temple Pilots in five years premieres, as does the biggest radio hit for Tom Keifer (Cinderella) in over two decades.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
RISING
Royal Blood – “I Only Lie When I Love You”
Five Finger Death Punch – “Trouble”
Pop Evil – “Waking Lions”
FALLING
Hellyeah – “Love Falls”
Highly Suspect – “Little One”
Mastodon – “Steambreather”
TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
Rather disturbing to see how few spins – less than half than needed in a typical week – were required to crack the Top 50 here. It’s such a dramatically low number, abruptly, that I’m inclined to wonder if it isn’t the product of some sort of computer error. Those are disturbingly frequent with the published chart lately, but usually not to this degree or in this fashion. Time will tell, soon enough,
