PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
SLAVES – “I’d Rather See Your Star Explode”
There’s no shortage of aggressive music these days. More often than not, the heavier bands tend to have vocalists whose style helps to create a wall of sound. Sometimes (to me), it feels like white noise. The bands that can add color are the ones that intrigue me most. Slaves definitely falls into that category.
Usually you have to wait for a violent thunderstorm to pass before you can enjoy the calming effect and beauty of a rainbow. With Slaves, you get to experience the thunderstorm and rainbow simultaneously. The intensity of “I’d Rather See Your Star Explode” is undeniable, so much so that you expect to hear at least some growling, if not an abundance of it. Instead, what you get is an unexpected, refreshing beam of light from the voice that is Jonny Craig.
Craig’s voice doesn’t sound like anything else in rock music, which makes it stand out even more. With a soulful, passionate quality, his vocals would seem to be more at home in an R&B or pop setting. Not the formulaic, crappy pop that litters the airwaves, mind you…but rather the pop that makes you stand up and take notice of the range (like Bruno Mars). This unique sound may seem to be out of left field, but it’s Craig’s foundation as a choir singer, and admitted influence of artists like Boyz II Men that makes it understandable.
“I’d Rather See Your Star Explode” is incredibly catchy and beautiful, but at the same time, it’s powerful and intense. What’s most important is that it’s a great, unique song that is starting to gain traction on SiriusXM’s Octane. Hopefully, the rest of active rock radio will jump on the bandwagon too.
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (By Adam Waldman)
Nothing More remains close enough to Theory Of A Deadman to rise to #1 if the current leader starts to decline at all. For the moment, both songs have enjoyed modest spin increases, as has current #3, Foo Fighters, but they remain far enough behind to not be a imminent threat. Seether made a strong move to reach #4 this week, but there is still a big gap for them to overcome to battle for the top spot. If recent trends hold, Theory Of A Deadman will drop before Nothing More, giving the latter a chance to reach the top before a decline.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN (by Jon Loveless)
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
A relatively busy week at active rock radio includes two new arrivals in the Top 10. Thirty Seconds To Mars and Marilyn Manson move up a couple spots each…
A Perfect Circle is the only new member of the Top 20 this week, where things remained relatively stable overall…
The major impact at radio is found in the Top 30, where both Five Finger Death Punch and Pop Evil soar with high chart debuts…
I Prevail also fares well out of the box, debuting in the Top 40…
Two more debuts are found in the final portion of the Top 50, including the latest from Powerman 5000.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
RISING
Seether – “Betray And Degrade”
Royal Blood – “I Only Lie When I Love You”
Five Finger Death Punch – “Trouble”
FALLING
Papa Roach – “American Dreams”
Nine Inch Nails – “Less Than”
Palaye Royale – “Get Higher”
TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
Considerably more activity, and even significant activity, than we’ve seen at radio in a while. It certainly continues to be a very good thing to be a core artist in the format, whether that status is relatively new or old. Maybe that’s the impetus for shaking things up more thoroughly, releases from artists that are locks to get heavy airplay with any release.
WRAP-UP
