PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
A PERFECT CIRCLE – “The Doomed”
Maynard James Keenan had the following to say about A Perfect Circle’s latest single, “The Doomed”…
“In light of this current difficult and polarized social, spiritual and political climate, we artist types need to open our big mouths and share the light a little louder.”
Personally speaking, I see both sides of taking Keenan’s advice. Choosing a side in the divide has the potential to alienate a number of fans. On the flip side, however, it also gives artists a chance to not only have their voices be heard, but also to expose themselves to a potentially new fan base. There are artists that I now respect more than I ever did, and ones that I no longer do. It’s the nature of the beast.
Regardless of where you stand politically, one thing that is undeniable is the power “The Doomed.” The song does NOT feature the typical Active Rock radio sound, which is one of the things that makes it so compelling. Following along the lines of what prog rock offers with regularity, “The Doomed” takes you on an intensely epic musical journey filled with twists and turns. From the opening drum beat, which brings memories of John Bonham rushing back, to Keenan’s distinct, angst-ridden vocals, to the majestic marching band-esque staccato, to the softer moments that feel like a blending of Rush’s “Xanadu” and Christmas music, and everything in between, “The Doomed” draws you in and doesn’t let you go. If you appreciate thought-provoking lyrics and music that evokes a visceral response, you will be mesmerized by “The Doomed.”
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (By Adam Waldman)
Theory Of A Deadman solidified their lead over Nothing More this week, leaving the duo locked in to the top w positions. It looks like it will remain that way for at least a few more weeks, as Papa Roach plateaued, and Foo Fighters enjoyed modest gains for the week. Beyond the top 4, the song to watch out for in the coming weeks (based on the current trend) is Marilyn Manson’s latest single, “KILL4ME.”
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN (by Jon Loveless)
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
It took 19 weeks for it to happen, but Korn finally gets their latest single into the Top 10…
Stone Sour reaches the Top 20, the only new entry in the upper region of the chart this week…
Greta Van Fleet hunts big game once again with their latest single, nearly tripling their airplay week-to-week as one of two songs to make a new appearance in the Top 30…
Avenged Sevenfold and A Perfect Circle both debut in the Top 40…
Motionless In White (f. Jonathan Davis) has one of two songs debuting in the final ten spots, the other entry being Hollywood-founded/Vegas-based newcomers Dead Girls Academy. “I’ll Find A Way” is a fitting title for their chart premiere, as the song has been showing airplay for at least twelve weeks before finally breaking through onto the published chart.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
RISING
Theory Of A Deadman – “Rx”
Marilyn Manson – “KILL4ME”
Greta Van Fleet – “Safari Song”
FALLING
Queens Of The Stone Age – “The Way You Used To Do”
Nine Inch Nails – “Less Than”
Prophets Of Rage – “Living On The 110”
TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
I noted the sloooooooow ascent of the Korn single this week, by way of comparison to the 15 weeks it took their previous single (“Take Me”) to reach the Top 10. The single before that (“Rotting In Vain”) needed only six weeks for the same benchmark. Is that an indication of a lack of enthusiasm from radio about the two most recent singles, or a sign that the charts are moving at a glacial pace more often than not at this point? My money says it’s a bit of both.
