PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
GARY CLARK JR. – “Come Together”
First came the Beatles, then Aerosmith offered up their interpretation of the original, and now guitarist extraordinaire Gary Clark Jr. has made “Come Together” his own. The message of the song seems particularly timing this week in America, as yet another controversy has divided the country. Normally, there would be no basis to mention professional sports in this forum, but in this case, there does seem to be a tie-in.
It’s no secret that the hard rock world is predominantly white. It’s also no secret that wide receivers in the NFL are predominantly black. So what does this have to do with Gary Clark Jr.? Just as most white wide receivers tend to be compared to each other, there is an obvious temptation to compare a great black guitarist to Jimi Hendrix.
Although I resisted the temptation to go for the obvious, the fact of the matter is that Clark Jr.’s guitar work on “Come Together” is reminiscent of a classic Hendrix moment. Appropriately enough, that moment was Hendrix’s uniquely memorable interpretation of the National Anthem at Woodstock.
As comparisons go, being mentioned in the same breath as Hendrix is a good one, regardless of ethnic background. Take a break from the controversy and enjoy this song, which may provide some food for thought.
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (By Adam Waldman)
Greta Van Fleet had a nice run at the top, but it’s a virtual lock that it ends next week. Highly Suspect’s “Little One” had regained some momentum, and now trails by less than 100 spins. With Greta Van Fleet dropping, it looks like Highly Suspect has a clear path to #1. However, since the song has been on the charts for what seems like forever, it wouldn’t be surprising if they hit #1 and then start to drop. Although Papa Roach and Nothing More are currently positioned higher, the song that looks like the best bet to eventually reach #1 is Theory Of A Deadman’s latest single, “Rx.”
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

FALLING

Foo Fighters – “Run”

TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
The chart success of the Gary Clark Jr. cover tune makes for an interesting example of the impact of ownership consolidation on airplay. Of the monitored spin count (which determines chart position), over two thirds of the song’s airplay comes from a handful of stations owned by the same entity (Cumulus). That’s right in-line with the fact that 8 of the 12 stations who had recorded spins for the track are owned by Cumulus. That airplay alone would have been enough to put the song in the mid-40s on the chart. Without that concentration of support, the song would have roughly half the spins of the #50 song. That’s a lot of power in one set of hands.
