PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
HOLLYWOOD UNDEAD – “California Dreaming”
This is not your “Mama’s” or your “Papa’s” “California Dreaming.” If you don’t get the reference, click here. If you do get the reference, you’ll know right away that the song of the same name (which came out over 50 years ago) was a sweet homage to the “Golden State.” Hollywood Undead’s “California Dreaming” also features a catchy, melodic hook, but the similarities end there. This song explores the darker side of California living with an adrenaline-pumping intensity that hits you like a runaway freight train. When it comes to blending rap and hard rock, for my money, there isn’t anyone better than Hollywood Undead on the scene these days. Although the band always features a hybrid of the two genres, their music is anything but predictable or formulaic. This is a band that pushes the envelope, and continues to evolve with each release. There’s a reason that Active Rock radio has already embraced this killer song.
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (By Adam Waldman)
Royal Blood and Rise Against were both relatively flat this week, leaving the former at #1 with a sold lead. Unless there is a momentum shift, it looks like Rise Against will peak at #2. The most likely challenge in the next few weeks is likely to come from newcomers with a classic sound…Greta Van Fleet. Their single (“Highway Tune”) showed strength this week, narrowing the gap between them and Royal Blood to less than 400 spins. The other song near the top showing strength is Nothing More’s “Go To War.” It wouldn’t be a surprise if the song climbs to #1, but it will take some time given its current standing.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
The final spot in this week’s published chart goes to Shinedown with a song that first started getting airplay on Sirius Octane nearly two months ago. It’s another example of where Octane was far ahead of their terrestrial counterparts. While that scenario is good for their listeners, and for the early push behind a single, if they drop off the track as it burns out while the rest of the stations are only getting started with it, then the song will underachieve in terms of chart position. Though that’s really only a talking point these days. In that sense, the song is similar to I Prevail ’s “Alone,” which was played heavily on Octane for several months before the rest of the country picked up on it. Luckily, the song still managed to crack the Top 10 despite the lack of consolidated airplay.
