PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
OTHERWISE – “Angry Heart”
The rational mind allows for a perspective that helps you realize that things aren’t always as bad as they seem. However, when you’re really pissed off, the rational mind (for many) doesn’t stand a chance against an “Angry Heart.” Otherwise’s latest single is an aggressive, angst-ridden, piss-and-vinegar type anthem that perfectly taps into the feeling of an anger that drowns out the rational mind. Most people can relate to the anger that you feel towards a person or about a situation that causes you to allow the good in you to be overpowered by negativity. Some people choose to let things fester beneath the surface, potentially creating an inner powderkeg, while others choose to wear their emotions on their sleeve and embrace the rage. If you fall into the latter category, you will find “Angry Heart” to be cathartic. Either way, this is a song that is getting well-deserved attention at radio.
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (By Adam Waldman)
As predicted last week, Royal Blood has ascended to the throne with their latest single, “Lights Out,” toppling Foo Fighters after a nice “Run” at the top. Also predicted was the “rise” of Rise Against to #2 with their latest single, “The Violence.” With Foo Fighters and Stone Sour filling out the top 4 (but dropping steadily), it looks like it will be at least a few weeks until there are any other serious challengers for #1. Greta Van Fleet is still showing solid gains, but they trail Royal Blood by over 500 spins at the moment, so they don’t look to be a threat in the next few weeks (at the very least).
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
At this point, Active Rock radio seems to either love songs or hate them, with little ground in between. Songs rocket into the Top 10 and stay there with almost no movement, or they get little airplay at all. There are relatively few monitored stations playing anything that hasn’t already hit the Top 50, and in most cases, they’re only playing a portion of those. The power to make a song rise rests in relatively few hands at this point. Thankfully, at least a few stations with independent decision-makers are still around… for now.
