PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
WAYLAND – “Through The Fire”
If you are a reader of Hard Rock Daddy, you’ve seen Wayland featured on more than one occasion. This is a band that pushes the envelope with songs that show a great deal of diversity. The blessing in this approach is that it provides an opportunity to cast a wider net to capture the attention of rock music fans. The curse in this approach is that getting airplay on Active Rock radio stations can be challenging because the band has a sound that isn’t easily categorized. While it’s important for bands to get whatever radio exposure that they can, Wayland is in a bit of a different situation. They are proud road warriors who make their living playing live gigs. They are also one of the best at making deep connections with their fans, which helps create a loyal following that doesn’t rely on hearing songs on the radio.
That being said, it’s great to see their latest single, “Through The Fire,” getting airplay and cracking the top 50. While Wayland is a modern band, their influences (particularly when it comes to vocal harmonies) are rooted in classic rock bands like Queen and Journey. Impressive, melodic vocal harmonies are on display in “Through The Fire,” which is something that you don’t hear that often on Active Rock radio. Hopefully, a number of stations will jump on this song to keep the momentum going.
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (By Adam Waldman)
In recent times, making predictions has gotten a bit more challenging because songs that seem to be trending in one direction can reverse course from week to week. As predicted last week, Stone Sour’s reign at the top ended this week, but they managed to hold off Metallica from dropping them all the way to #3. As unlikely as it seems, the juggernaut that is Metallica peaked at #2, when #1 seemed to be well within their grasp. Timing is everything, I suppose. If not for the battle with another format heavyweight, they most likely would have hit #1 again. Foo Fighters now hold the throne, and by the looks of what’s behind them, there’s no reason that they shouldn’t have an extended “Run” at the top with their latest single.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

Kid Rock – “Greatest Show On Earth”
FALLING
Imagine Dragons – “Believer”
A Day To Remember – “Bullfight”
Hell Or Highwater – “I Want It All”
TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
A decidedly top-heavy chart this week, with over 87% of the spins for the entire published chart going to the Top 25 songs. That’s considerably higher than normal (around 75% of spins). In turn, all the consolidation of airplay means that cracking the top 50 requires 30-40%t fewer spins than usual. The shift suggests that monitored stations are not only playing fewer currents, but also moving more spins to recurrents as well.
