PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
GRETA VAN FLEET – “Highway Tune”
Whenever a new artist comes around that shakes things up, it’s easy to assume that the masses are all aware of who they are. However, that isn’t necessarily the case. Whenever Greta Van Fleet’s “Highway Tune” comes on the radio, it takes about 10 seconds to identify the band, but not necessarily for the reason that you would expect. This Michigan 4-piece rock and roll unit is new on the scene, but it sounds like they’ve been around since the ’70s. In fact, if you didn’t know any better, you’d think that “Highway Tune” was a lost cut from Led Zeppelin’s Houses Of The Holy album. Several times in recent weeks, people have asked me who that “Zeppelin band” is. Some may look at Greta Van Fleet as having a derivative sound, but to me, sounding like Zeppelin in their prime is a major achievement. What makes things even more impressive is that this band is way too young to ever have experienced Zeppelin during their pinnacle. “Highway Tune,” which cracked the top 15 this week, offers a glimmer of hope that Active Rock radio has a willingness to embrace bands that are rooted in Classic Rock. That’s good for bands and listeners alike. There’s no telling what the ceiling is for these newcomers if they are coming out of the gate this strong.
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (by Adam Waldman)
Last week, it was predicted that Foo Fighters would join Stone Sour and Metallica in the top three this week. That prediction came through with flying colors. With another incredibly strong week for the band’s latest single, “Run,” it looks like Dave Grohl and company will be threatening both of the front runners sooner rather than later. Even a modest decline by either of the top two next week will push Foo Fighters up the chart if their current trend continues. It’s hard to imagine a scenario where “Run” isn’t #1 in the coming weeks.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN (by Jon Loveless)
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
Beartooth and Pretty Reckless claim the final two spots in this week’s Top 20, the first two songs to move up a tier in the latest chart. (In other words, this week’s Top 10 is the same as last week’s aside from shuffling the order a bit)…
The Top 30 sees three new arrivals this week, also in the final three slots of the segment..
Queens of the Stone Age have the highest debut this week, joined by Korn as new to the Top 40…
Shaman’s Harvest leads a pair of songs that debut in the 41-50 range.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
RISING
Foo Fighters – “Run”
Greta Van Fleet – “Highway Tune”
Highly Suspect – “Little One”
FALLING
Volbeat (f. Danko Jones) – “Black Rose”
Mastodon – “Show Yourself”
Avenged Sevenfold – “God Damn”
TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
Debuting at #49 this week is the somewhat curious case of Palaye Royale’s song “Get Higher.” It was a relatively minor rock radio hit in Canada for about a month two years ago. The band won some sort of MTV fan-voting contest three years ago. The song in question was originally released as a single and video FOUR years ago. Yet this “current” single appears to have only been included as a bonus track on the new album released in 2016 by Sumerian Records. The song isn’t bad really, but I sure have a hard time not wondering why an aging track that didn’t warrant significant rock radio airplay over the last four years is suddenly deemed worthy now. Maybe this is just some sort of “fashion art-rock band” (their own description of their genre) thing that I’m not hip enough to get.
