PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
HINDER – “Remember Me”
This summer, Hinder will be releasing their second album with Marshal Dutton on lead vocals. Ahead of the release of The Reign, the band dropped their first single, “Remember Me.” There are two different approaches to replacing a lead singer…find someone who sounds like the original, or find someone that can lead the band in a new direction. Hinder has chosen the latter with Dutton. What’s interesting about this change of direction is that Dutton helped to write and produce some of the band’s most popular albums when Austin John Winkler was still at the helm. With “Remember Me,” the band stays true to their catchy, melodic, mainstream sound that works well on Active Rock radio. When Winkler was fronting the band, his distinct vocals grabbed most of the attention. With Dutton on lead vocals, the band shines a bit brighter, particularly Joe “Blower” Garvey’s guitar work.
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (by Adam Waldman)
Last week, it was predicted that Stone Sour and Metallica would both be putting pressure on Volbeat in the #1 position. It happened even faster than expected. After gaining over 200 spins last week, “Black Rose” seemed to have regained its momentum. Given that both Stone Sour and Metallica each gained only around 100 spins last week, it looked as though it would take at least a few weeks for either one to claim the #1 spot. In retrospect, it seems as though the plan was to manufacture a #1 hit for Volbeat, and then move on. After last week’s surge, the song lost spins this week, and dropped to #2 behind Stone Sour’s “Song #3.” There’s a decent chance that next week’s top 3 will include Stone Sour, Metallica and Foo Fighters, whose momentum is likely to leapfrog them over other contenders.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
The return of Shallow Side to the Top 40 is an interesting situation that arises more frequently than a casual observer might expect. “Can You Hear Me” was nowhere to be found on last week’s published chart, yet this week, it is indicated as having been at #41 a week ago. While discrepancies of that sort occur with (what should be) disturbing frequency, it’s unusual to see it be enough to remove a song from the published chart entirely (typically being a matter of only one or two positions). Their airplay remained largely stable week-to-week, so hopefully the damage was minimal, but it’s unfortunate that more care isn’t put into what’s being published.
