PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
AVENGED SEVENFOLD – “Malagueña Salerosa (La Malagueña)”
A Mexican folksong on Active Rock radio??? YES! Well, not normally, but when it’s a rocking cover by Avenged Sevenfold, it should absolutely be getting airplay. This is the band’s first-ever Spanish-language release. There was a plan to record the song in both English and Spanish, but ultimately, the band chose to honor the original by only doing it in Spanish. M. Shadows deserves a lot of credit for naturally pulling this off, given that he doesn’t speak the language. He worked every day for weeks with a Spanish-speaking friend on pronunciation, even going so far as to bring him into the studio to help produce the vocals.
Aside from the heavy bottom of the bass, you wouldn’t believe that this is Avenged Sevenfold early on in the song. M. Shadows sings melodically over flamenco guitars. As the song builds, A7X’s distinct style comes through, but never becomes overpowering. The beauty of the Spanish guitar and the traditional horns make you feel like you’re in a Mexican cantina.
Most bands would get no consideration from Active Rock radio with a song like this, but A7X has earned enough goodwill in the format to warrant airplay. It may not be for everyone, but if you listen with an open mind, you may discover a taste for a style of music that you aren’t usually exposed to.
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (by Adam Waldman)
Last week, it was predicted that Seether’s run at the top would definitely end this week (they dropped to #4). The trend was showing that Stone Sour, and possibly even Metallica were in position to leapfrog Volbeat (f. Danko Jones), preventing “Black Rose” from becoming a #1 single. As we’ve seen in recent times, trends seem to move in fits and starts. Just when you think that a song is leveling off, they have a big week and the momentum builds. That’s what happened this week, as “Black Rose” increased spins by over 200, while Stone Sour’s “Song #3” and Metallica’s “Now That We’re Dead” both increased by just over 100 spins. With two heavyweights knocking on the door, there’s no telling at the moment how long Volbeat will remain on top. They’re not there yet, but it shouldn’t take long for Foo Fighters to join in the battle in the coming weeks with their latest single, “Run.”
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

Volbeat wins a pretty good week-long battle with Stone Sour to take over the top position in the chart. “Song #3” actually had the #1 spot for about 24 hours early in the week, only to be overtaken by the time the latest chart became official.
