PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
SHALLOW SIDE – “Can You Hear Me”
Shallow Side takes various elements of music that appears regularly on Active Rock radio and seamlessly blends them into an interesting mix that makes them stand out as one of the more interesting bands in the format these days. From the southern-flavored riffs and rhythm in the vein of Black Stone Cherry and Shaman’s Harvest, to the sweet, melodic, groove-oriented vocals, to the intense, layered breaks that are reminiscent of Nothing More, “Can You Hear Me” delivers. At times, you can even sense a hint of the mainstream sound of bands like Train and Maroon 5. You wouldn’t expect to hear such diverse elements in one song, but Shallow Side makes it seem like a perfectly natural fit. You have to love when bands throw caution to the wind and end up with a result that is this good. Following up their recent inspired cover of the Styx classic, “Renegade,” Shallow Side once again hits it out of the park. Programmers…are you listening? “Can You Hear Me” is what your listeners deserve to hear!
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (by Adam Waldman)
There is still some surprise at the top of the chart after all. Last week, Seether looked to be a virtual lock to be the next #1 after Papa Roach, but Starset ended up regaining their previous momentum, and ended up leapfrogging Seether (whose spins also increased). It looks like the battle will continue with these two, as they are only separated by around 25 spins. There are no other challengers closing in at the moment, but that can change if the latest from Volbeat and/or Metallica picks up steam.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THREE UP & THREE DOWN
RISING
Starset – “Monster”
Seether – “Let You Down”
As Lions – “Aftermath”
FALLING
Breaking Benjamin – “Never Again”
Bleeker – “Highway”
Pretty Reckless – “Oh My God”
TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
Interesting to see Starset re-take the #2 position on the chart (at least from the standpoint of the relative age of the top three songs). Papa Roach and Seether are at the top of the chart after just nine weeks, whereas Starset’s “Monster” debuted 24 weeks ago. This isn’t uncommon for this band from Columbus, Ohio. Their last two singles spent 23-26 weeks on the chart, despite never reaching the Top 10. That pales in comparison to their biggest hit to date – “My Demons” – which remained on the Top 50 airplay chart for 48 weeks while only reaching #8.
