PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
BLACK STONE CHERRY – “Cheaper To Drink Alone”
Over the past few years, country rock artists have begun to cross over to Active Rock. There are elements of Black Stone Cherry’s latest single (“Cheaper To Drink Alone”) that have the same country rock sensibilities as those artists that have crossed over. What’s interesting about BSC is that they have been mainstays on Active Rock radio for years. Their brand of southern rock has always found a way to fit in. While this song has a little bit more twang than usual, it also features the catchy, soulful melodies that we’ve come to expect from the band. It’s a fun, party song that features a nice bluesy, shredding interlude. At the end of the day, this is some good old fashioned, timeless rock and roll, and nice change of pace for any Active Rock playlist.
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (by Adam Waldman)
As predicted last week, Papa Roach and Korn cemented themselves into the top 2, and Starset joined them in the top 3. Barring a meaningful drop, it doesn’t look like the top 2 will be changing anytime soon. Starset had solid gains to move up to #3, but a big jump from Seether closed the gap between the two. Another week like this one, and Seether will leapfrog Starset and reach the top 3. Looking ahead to the next battle for the top, Seether looks like a solid bet once Papa Roach and Korn begin to drop.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
Papa Roach remains atop the Mediabase Active Rock Airplay chart for a second week, actually extending their airplay lead over #2, Korn. Starset climbs to the #3 spot, passing Breaking Benjamin as the former #1 begins to slide downward.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
Mastodon climbs nicely to reach the Top 10 this week, joined by Bleeker who returns to #10 despite declining airplay…
Avatar leads a pair of new arrivals into the Top 20…
The momentum continues for As Lions, who make their Top 30 debut this week…
Two new entries and one returning song in this week’s Top 40 tier…
Four songs debut in the Top 50, led by Shallow Side.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
RISING
Papa Roach – “Help”
Seether – “Let You Down”
Volbeat (f. Danko Jones) – “Black Rose”
FALLING
Breaking Benjamin – “Never Again”
Shinedown – “How Did You Love”
Pretty Reckless – “Oh My God”
TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
Keep an eye on the movement of the lead single from Seether’s new album. It is starting to look like a possibility to bypass the songs currently ahead of it whenever radio decides to move off an equally new song from Papa Roach.
